In complex spectra of such transitions the identification of the pair of states corresponding to an observed transition energy is a difficult process. The assignment of transition energies to energy levels proceeds in stages. At each stage, some identifications will be erroneous. Robust fitting methods have proven extremely helpful for finding errors and for obtaining reliable identifications and estimates of energy levels. This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Abstract Low back pain (LBP) is the most prevalent health problem in Switzerland and a leading cause of reduced work performance and disability. This study estimated the total cost of LBP in Switzerland in 2005 from a societal perspective using a bottom-up prevalence-based cost-of-illness approach. The study considers more cost categories than are typically investigated and includes the costs associated with a multitude of LBP sufferers who are not under medical care. The findings are based on a questionnaire completed by a sample of 2,507 German-speaking respondents, of whom 1,253 suffered from LBP in the last 4 weeks; 346 of them were receiving medical treatment for their LBP. Data Mining wird in verschiedenen Bereichen erfolgreich eingesetzt. Anwendungsbeispiele aus schweizerischen Verkehrsplanungen fehlen aber bisher weitgehend. Ziel der Forschungsarbeit war es, den praktisch taetigen Verkehrsplaner mit dem Prozess und den Methoden von Data Mining vertraut zu machen und die Moeglichkeiten von Data Mining als Hilfsmittel in der Verkehrsplanung auszuloten. Although Data Science draws on content from established fields like artificial intelligence, statistics, databases, visualization and many more, industry is demanding for trained data scientists that no one seems able to deliver. This is due to the pace at which the field has expanded and the corresponding lack of curricula; the unique skill set, which is inherently multi-disciplinary; and the translation work (from the US web economy to other ecosystems) necessary to realize the recognized world-wide potential of applying analytics to all sorts of data. In this contribution we draw from our experiences in establishing an inter-disciplinary Data Science lab in order to highlight the challenges and potential remedies for Data Science in Europe. Deutsch Eine nahe liegende Erweiterung der linearen multiplen Regression wird dadurch erreicht, d... more Deutsch Eine nahe liegende Erweiterung der linearen multiplen Regression wird dadurch erreicht, dass die in den unbekannten Parametern lineare Regressionsfunktion durch eine nichtlineare ersetzt wird. Diese Erweiterung schafft grenzenlose Möglichkeiten. Nur schon für sigmoide Kurven gibt es unzählige Funktionsfamilien, die sich z.T. aber kaum unterscheiden. In der Praxis sind deshalb jene Ansätze, die sich aus dem Anwendungsgebiet ableiten lassen, am erfolgreichsten. Will man nichtlineare Funktionen an Daten anpassen, so geht man analog wie in der linearen Regressionsrechnung vor. Allerdings stellen sich einige zusätzliche Herausforderungen, weil die Schätzgleichungen nicht mehr explizit gegeben sind: (1) Die Gleichungen müssen iterativ gelöst werden und es braucht deshalb geeignete Startwerte.
