Flexible Support Structure for Scholar-driven Publishing
Description
Institutional Publishing Service Providers (IPSPs) can develop flexible service structures for scholar-led publishing to promote bibliodiversity, multilingualism, and discipline-specific publication cultures. Bern Open Publishing (BOP), the Open Access publication service at the University Library of Bern, operates publishing platforms for journals and books that strive towards these goals. BOP’s range of services and tools is designed to meet the different needs of researchers, authors and editors alike. The aim is to offer options for scholard-led publishing at every stage for heterogeneous publishing needs. Bibliodiversity. By providing a flexible structure for scholar-led publishing, BOP promotes discipline-based publishing cultures and bibliodiversity: Scholars can publish journals, video-journals, monographs, edited volumes, document editions, special catalogs or collections of interviews. At Bern Open Publishing, researchers and editors can choose a workflow that matches their resources, technical skills and editorial requirements. The xml-first approach improves dissemination and enables a wider range of bibliodiversity in different formats.
Researchers and editors have a choice of three xml-first workflows: a Pandoc, SciFlow and Marcalyc for journals that we can register in Redalyc.
In addition, editors are free to work with commercial service providers to produce their publication formats.
Printed versions of journals and books are available either through commercial publishers or through a print-on-demand provider based in Switzerland.
Multilingualism. The OJS platform BOP Serials offers English, German, Spanish, French and Italian as standard system languages. Other languages can be added at the request of the researchers. The language of the publications is up to the editors. Certain tools for the xml workflows feature templates that can be tailored to the needs of the researchers. For example, it is possible to create text passages in Hebrew or Farsi.
The OMP platform BOP Books offers German and English as system languages. At the time of writing, BOP Books features publications in German, English and French. AV content. A IIIF server is available for image-heavy publications and allows for high-resolution images to be imported directly into the publications. Our poster gives an overview of BOP’s service structure for researchers that allows them to pursue their publications according to their possibilities and the needs and requirements of their research area.
