I don't know why I'm here instead of on DW, but whatever. I've been doing okay, for anyone wondering — actually, great? I've been doing college, I've been reading, I've been doing small amounts of writing.

College: I might be done next year, with an AA instead of a BA. Which is fine, I need out of the system and I realized that math courses were digging into my PTSD pretty hard. It's been amazing how much energy I've gotten back just from not...taking stats anymore.

Reading: over a hundred books this year. I now keep an updated goodreads and write reviews occasionally. It is my favorite hobby and it does me so much good...and financial harm, because I buy too many books. Part of my over-buying was due to math stress though, so that should be coming under control.

Well... I'll try to write more updates here more often. Writing this year was posted almost entirely to AO3, so using numbers from there.

Total number of completed stories:

Fourteen. That's...a lot less than the number of 100+ back in 2012. To be fair, most of these are mammoth fics, and few are smaller than 500 words. ... Actually, none are. The writing fragments didn't get posted, see, and I didn't do any drabbles or comment-fics, really.

Total word count:
65,010 words posted on AO3, not counting any fragments I've put on my tumblr or left in the WIP pile. Considering that I like most of what I wrote this year? I'm pretty proud of it!

Overall Thoughts

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
I don't know what I was expecting. It's a lot - I was not expecting that many longfics, or was I expecting...so few smaller fics. I usually have a lot of ficlets and drabbles cluttering things up, but nope. Not this year. Huh.

What's your own favorite story of the year?
say nothing; share nothing

Hands down my favorite fic I've written this year - I adore bits of my other stuff, but this is the one I'm most proud of. It was written in the zone, it was magical, I loved it. I also did something I haven't done before with it - I wrote a first draft, then stripped it of all lines that were clunky and rewrote it from there. And it was miles better than it had any right to be.

It also helps that I loooooooooooooooooove soulbonds and soulbonding in general. :)

Did you take any writing risks this year?
I...completed a bang? Does that count? Hum. I don't think I really took risks this year? I mean, maybe in the plotting department.

Ah. I did start a five-story arc this December that I haven't posted any yet, but it's a risk in that the plotting demands that the first story in the arc - well, it's disconnected from the rest of the story until the plot-threads realign. So if I can pull that off, it'll be a successful risk.

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?
- Pull off trope_bingo so I can have a second card.
- Finish dragonfic - all five parts of it.
- Write a sci-fi story so I can attempt to send it to a magazine.
- Write more than one original piece this year. I've got the characters and the stories - let's get them on paper.
- Finish things I set out to write.

Best & Worst Of

My best story of this year:
I've already answered this question - I consider say nothing; share nothing to be the best-written thing of the year - so let's go with most popular. Nothing can top last year's mega-hit How To Excel At Supervillainy (and lose your heart to America) as it's got over 32k hits now and 1,528 kudos. I don't know if I'll ever write anything more popular than that, frankly.

But 2013. The most popular fic of 2013 was percolating, aka coffeeshop Steve/Tony au, fandom catnip. What makes this fic interesting to me is the vigilante!Tony aspect - but either way. Ironfries actually recced this on her tumblr, which drew in more readers, and well! I'm glad. I like it when people enjoy my stuff. :)

My most popular story of this year:
....
....
Maybe I should read the questions in advance before I answer them.

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
they name dragons, aka the convoluted fantasy AU that might have worked better as an original fic entirely disconnected from Tony and Bruce, but oh well. I really, really, REALLY like parts of it and feel that more people should have read it, but to be fair, it is 15k.

Most fun story to write:
Half-tempted to put down 'writing isn't fun come on' here, but it is sometimes! I had a lot of fun writing...well, a lot of these. More fun plotting them, but I do enjoy it when the words are flowing.

Story with the single sexiest moment:
I don't know. I wrote a few smutty pieces this year, but on the whole there wasn't much in the way of eroticism. Bad answer? Bad answer.

I'll go with to prevent flight for mental images, because hot damn, metal wings! I know there's no smut in it, but who cares? Not me!

Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
Ehhhhhh. Let's say opia. Why? Because it presents the idea that the gamma radiation experiment/accident turned Bruce's daemon into the Hulk, and that's. That's horrifying, frankly. Having your soul lashing out and attacking people like that? Brrrrrrrr.

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
Displacement, hands-down. In-fact, it really brought me a new perspective on Bruce, and Steve - legete's meta on the two led almost directly to the fic's creation, as a matter of fact.

Truth be told, it's usually not the writing that changes my perspective on the characters - it's the meta and plotting and thinking I do before and after that does. And then I kick myself because I've fouled up IC-ness so badly because I hadn't realized something yet.

Hardest story to write:
Displacement. 3/4ths of the way through I had a burn-out and it took a lot of pain to get that thing done in time for the deadline. But I did finish it! Ha!

Biggest Disappointment:
My WIP pile.

No, I'm not kidding. Some of my fave stuff is in there, forever to be un-posted and unread.

Biggest Surprise:
...Hoo. The fact that I finished Displacement? The fact that I wrote fem!Steve/Peggy?

No, no. It's the fact that I wrote sad Steve in snow - I think it was almost a thousand words of it? - and I did it unprompted because of a mental image...and I can never post it because it's part of an AU I've got plotted but writing it would take for-ev-er.

sigh, self. sigh.

Most Unintentionally Telling Story:
Life Model Matchmaker. Why? Because the thing was written in a feverish 3-5 hours and posted and it's directly from my subconscious. No, I haven't reread it since it went up. Could be gibberish for all I know.

Short version:
I like what I wrote this year, I came up with a lot of ideas this year, and I hope to do more this year. Marvel / MCU isn't conducive to this as most to all of their heroes are out and public, but I can't help but gravitate to fics that explore the AU idea of 'what if Tony hadn't outted himself in MCU' / 'is Captain America really Steve Rogers?' and so on.

There's a modern 'superheroes' AU I've been meaning to take and flesh out for months now. Captain America and the Winter Soldier, a pair of Brooklyn vigilantes keeping the place crime-free. (Also, apparently the copy I'm reading came from my grandma, so it's been neat to let her know I'm reading it.)

And finally I'm reading Dan Abnett's Gaunt's Ghosts books - I'm in the early stages of the third book, Necropolis, and it's. It's so grimdark. I love it. I'm prepared for everyone to die, and with that mindset firmly in place, I love it. Great military-type novels in a sci-fi grimdark universe. (Warhammer 40k, to be precise, but you barely need to know anything other than the forces of Chaos = bad.) I have to hand it to Abnett, though - I've never seen a plot wrapped up so quickly. The second book, Ghostmaker - literally five pages and he wrapped up the plot, resolved the loose ends, and in the process didn't confuse or irritate me. It was a good ending. Just. Five pages. Or Steve/Bucky. Any variant of the above.

curtainfic: This one is an odd start, as I don't have much in the way of ideas for it. It could be a Steve-buying-furniture fic, him adjusting to the future, but then it could be Bucky, or Bruce...depending on the character it'd have to be AU. I may skip this prompt, to be honest. Fortunately bingos are helpful when working with prompts I'm fuzzy about.

mind control: Whatever I do with this one, it must - must - avoid hitting the triggery hot spots that Winter Soldier's Widow Hunt arc triggered for me, or a certain fic...Point is. I'm torn between an obedience curse (the obvious choice is Tony, because yaaay control issues, but there's also Bruce, or Steve...point is, if I limit that kind of curse to just them...I think I could keep it from an uncomfortable situation. Or if I write into a corner, it would be an interesting corner) and a more elaborate set-up, one where the mind-control is larger in scope, and the basic premise is that someone among the team is made to forget that they're a hero. And the rest of the team - perhaps everyone? - is made to forget them entirely. That fic would focus on how said member finds his or her way back to their lives.

Long story short, mind control and I would be plotty and potentially angst and interesting.

secret child: Haaaah. This one is an automatic skip unless I think up the perfect premise or actually go for a blackout.

a/b/o: Pure PWP. If I want world-building a/b/o I'll yoink legete's ideas and do something. But as I'm not interested in writing longfic with this premise, then it's very likely to be pure smut. Self-indulgent, obviously.

au: other: Ohoho, this one is open to so much. Fic where Tony's a robot, has been since he never came back from his kidnapping. Some complex premise where JARVIS has been responsible for keeping the robot from realizing it's not really human, and the reason the robot is there in the first place is due to Obie - but thanks to JARVIS' help he gets his own free-will back. ...Anyways. Anything for this square is likely to become long and plotty and explode as my stories are wont to do.

cross-dressing: My first thought is tiny!Steve crossdressing, going out with Bucky. Yet there's also the wonder of always-a-girl!Tony who's also Iron Man because she didn't make a boob plate for safety reasons and the media assumed Iron Man was male and the label stuck. So the cross-dressing here would involve Tony Stark cross dressing as a guy in and out of the armor. (does the armor count?)

soul-bonding: Ugh I love soul-bonding. I'll grab a quote from myself in an IM log that explains the three kinds of flavors I'll roll with for soul-bonds, depending on the fic.

'A) My standard vanilla bond: two folks touch skin-to-skin, feels a bit like static electricity, then hello bond. Shares thoughts/emotions, can't turn it off, can pull away from it (may cause pain if one person pulls too hard) and in general I hope they can get along. (when it does fit it's blisslike) (just like marriage!)

Writing that for three people would be...pretty much the same, but this much more unstable. Arguments could be awful.

My standard universal rules with them - well, couples are predetermined, it's fate/destiny yaddayadda. Happens rarely but often enough that society recognizes what a bond is and in general cultures respect bonds. A bonded couple automatically gets..y'know, next of kin rights in hospitals and so on. I haven't sat down and hashed out what happens to, say, a bonded pair where one of them commits a crime, but fortunately it hasn't cropped up.

B) Any number of those 'meant-to-be' hookups. Names on hands, countdown timers, what have you. There's no bond, just whatever sprouts up between them. This is possibly the most organic/natural way for a bond-type story to be arranged - but could argue about it being a bond-type story, but either way. Just wanted to mention it. (I'm not going this route)

C) The one where a kid gets their thought-sharing/emotion-sharing bond when they're young/teens with or without meeting the person. This universe has more potential for angst, because while ideal couples have the bestest invisible friend who turns into a friend and more as they grow up, not-so-ideal couples....um....thinking of, say, a tragic housefire and whoever was on the other side of that bond - brrr.'

I promptly went off on a plot-bunny that's a C variant with Steve/Tony/Bruce and with luck the final product won't be too jumbled. \\o/ (I have actually started work on this one.)

au: college/highschool: I am torn about this one. I tend not to like these aus unless they're really well done, see. As for ideas...well, I keep blanking. I'm likely to skip this, frankly. Or do as short as possible a piece on it.

genderswap: Could do the always-a-girl!Tony thing here. Or I could go for a PWP piece. Something plotty. Frankly? Genderswaps are one of those aus where I'll only read it if it sounds good / is by an author I trust. They generally don't appeal to me. *shrug* (I am always welcome to try writing a fic that completely changes my mind on the subject.) Alternative option: explore this picture's universe.

holiday: Not more Christmas fic. Maybe Halloween. No, definitely Halloween. Need superheroes going out as other superheroes, obviously. :D (This is likely to be shorter, unless something goes horribly wrong.)

secret twin/doppleganger: Ohohoho. Nothing like evil clones, am I right? Just depends on who I want to run through the mill at the time.

time travel: You know? After I've written a fic where Tony's been pitched back to the past, and after contemplating other 'welcome to the past!' fics, it may be time for me to think of a 'welcome to the future!' fic. Or do something like that MAA comic where future!Tony shows up and completely out-plays Tony. (Spider-Man kept asking why he even needed them, because his suit was handling all of the problems. XD;;)

kidfic: Might skip this. Might turn Dummy and Butterfingers into kids (except they wouldn't be kids kinda robots are weird) via magic and watch trouble unfold. Thing is. I'm pickier about this one.

truth or dare: With the Avengers, this can only end in tears.

drunkfic: Hi, Tony.

(Gee, the above are easy to plot.) (Which might make them both huge problems when it comes to write them. I'm essentially taking the cliched route out, and...that doesn't work for me unless it's PWP, generally. We'll see.)

au: daemons: Do...do I really have to? elioenai was The golden standard for this AU, and if that's not enough, there were pan's fics where Coulson was a daemon, and I just. I'd be afraid to write, for they've topped this area out.

...On the other hand, I kind of was in that same spot when I wrote my villain!Tony fic, because there were at least three of those fics out there and they were great, so...hmmm.

au: neighbors: Steve and Bruce. Steve sees Bruce gardening over his fence. Steve's not sure what he did to earn a house with a white-picket fence (and an intact Bucky), but he's going to be a friendly neighbor. Bruce his neighbor is shy and reclusive but has a garden and one morning he turns up on his doorstep with a bag of zucchini. (If he sends Tony instead, Tony's doing this with such an eyeroll and a "I'll pay you to take these." because zucchini is the worst/best crop.)

I don't know what kind of au this would be - how much it'd diverge from canon - but welp. Look. Zucchinis.

celebratory kisses: Who doesn't like sleepy-post!Hulk kisses with Bruce?

snowed in: I'm likely to go with either the one where they're on assignment in rural country or the one where a plane crashes them in a cave or something. I just need to get two characters trapped near some snow, right?

Watch my plotbrain wake up to the smell of convoluted plot ideas: something involving Steve being (re?)frozen in ice and Tony getting stuck with the ice block while waiting for rescue or for the cold to get him and and and -

au: circus: I have no idea! I don't do circuses! But if I absolutely must, Thor can be a lion-tamer. Or something. I don't know! (Bruce as the sad clown - )

sharing a bed: Pick a cliche. It's not a violent struggle - he'd break free if it were - but instead it's Bruce holding the back of his neck and keeping him down with a steady pressure.

There are reasons why the hold works, reasons that Tony has theorized over and explained to him in fits of fascination, but all Steve can remember now is that Bruce grips his neck and his world shrinks down to the sensation of the chain of his dog-tags biting into his skin as the metal warms to Bruce's touch.

Bruce listens to him pant into the pillow, waits for him to calm down, and carefully lets go, smoothing Steve's hair back.

"It's not so bad now," Steve reports, trying not to lose it as the tentacles attached to his back uncurl from their resting position, waking up as he does. It feels like he's grown six not-really-hands and he hates this mutation. He knows it will wear off within a day, and he knows that this is temporary, but it's not reassuring in the least when he can't get up from the bed without getting aroused as the tentacles touch anything and everything they can reach without his consent.

"I'm not going anywhere," Bruce promises. Steve doesn't want to know what he sees right now; he doesn't want to think.

"I - nng!" Steve's whole body jolts as one of the tentacles wraps itself around Bruce's arm. He processes warm skin and he can feel Bruce's pulse as the tentacle settles around Bruce's wrist. "Oh - I - oh god - Bruce - "

That's why he's not going anywhere. The tentacles are oversensitive, and he has no filter. He feels everything and somehow his brain translates that to pleasure.

He moans into the pillow, trying not to squirm, erection jutting into the mattress. He doesn't grind his hips forward, but it's a near thing. Panic isn't enough to kill the arousal, not when he twists his head back to look at Bruce, unable to ask for the help. It's too much.

Bruce is a lifesaver: he doesn't hesitate to put his hand back on Steve's neck and push him down, grounding him. Steve goes still, then relaxes under Bruce's hold, panic receding.

But.

This time the tentacles don't go limp and loose and curl on Steve's back. This time the one around Bruce's arm tightens its grip and stays as its siblings gravitate to Bruce, gently exploring his arm, his shoulder, the cleft between shirt-sleeve and skin, his hand - there is no tugging, simply the limbs touching Bruce and exploring him. The tentacled equivalent of trailing fingers along bare skin.

Steve remains still, grounded by Bruce's hold but helpless because of it, unable to do anything except feel.

"They're friendly," Bruce says, gently taking one with his free hand and guiding it away from his shirt. "Steve, are you alright?"

Steve realizes that he's been making a noise halfway between a moan and a whimper and tries to say no, but Bruce squeezes the tentacle as he pulls it away and all Steve can manage is an aborted hiccup.

He's going to come, he realizes. He is going to come untouched on the sheets because these alien appendages won't stop touching Bruce. He doesn't want to, he thinks, but there's nothing he can do about it.

As he realizes this one of the tentacles turns back from Bruce, reaching back between his legs and wrapping itself around his cock and balls, and Steve makes a strangled sound, hips jerking forward at the sensation.

He thrusts forward, grinding into the bed for nearly a minute before he can think enough to figure out what that tentacle is doing: he can't come. Not with the tentacle restraining him, and that thought leads to the next: did it react to him? To his fear?

Almost as confirmation the tentacle squeezes, making cry out. And it happens again, and again, the other tentacles sticking to Bruce, and distantly he hears Bruce speaking, but he can't listen, not when the other tentacles are moving, winding their ways into Bruce's clothing, not when two of them have wound around Bruce's wrists, keeping his hands on Steve's shoulder and neck.

"Oh god," Steve manages, gripping at the bed. "Bruce - "

---

Is fine. Is calm. Bruce breathes, giving up on convincing the tentacles to let go of him, focused instead on keeping himself under control.

At least they aren't turning violent, he reflects wryly. The tentacles have proven themselves to be stronger than any normal human, bending and breaking Iron Man's armor earlier - Tony had not been happy, and that was one of the reasons why Steve had volunteered to wait in his room until the mutation wore off.

Bruce doesn't contemplate the injuries he could be facing if the tentacles did get violent, or the injuries Steve would get as a result. He had to remain calm, after all.

"Try touching them," Tony says from the doorway, and Bruce looks over, suppressing a sigh. Tony's in fine spirits, back in civilian clothes (a t-shirt and jeans) and clearly ready to come on in and bother Steve.

"I've tried not to encourage them," Bruce says.

"Well, look at where that's gotten you." Tony shrugs, closing the door behind him. "Giving them some attention may get them to calm down, instead of teasing Steve every time he so much as looks at you."

Bruce would sigh: Tony's been waiting for this ever since he found out exactly how sensitive the tentacles are. It's a miracle Tony's held off for so long, actually.

In the end he says nothing as Tony undresses, listening to Steve's moans and thinking back to a similar scene from just a few days ago: Steve held under him while Tony undressed, and while the tentacles hadn't been present, the sex had been intense. (Carefully so on his part, but worth the trouble.)

Steve whimpers into the pillow again as Tony kneels on the other side of him. Bruce wonders how he'll go about this but doesn't ask, resigning himself instead to sitting and waiting.

(That's part of his ongoing fascination with Tony: yes, he can rely on Tony giving into temptation all too often and pushing past boundaries he shouldn't, but it's the context and the method that draws Bruce back to watch, time and time again. That, and those rare moments when Tony goes too far and realizes that he has, understands why without prodding. Bruce wants to be there for those moments.)

Tony starts by putting a hand on Steve's shoulder, giving what's probably meant to be a reassuring squeeze before pushing Steve onto his side. Steve's surprisingly pliable, moving without much prompting, lying so he faces Bruce, tentacles still firmly in place.

"How's he look?"

"Aroused," Bruce says, not letting go of Steve. He's there for Steve - Tony, too - and he'll stay calm here. He'll make sure that no one gets pushed too far here.

"I never would have guessed," Tony deadpans. "Bruce, I want details. I'll call Jarvis up, get a detailed description from him if I have to."

But Steve is aroused, eyes closed, mouth open, hips thrusting in small movements. His hands are clenched into fists, and Bruce spots sweat beading on his forehead. It's rare for Steve to truly exert himself during sex (unless they're getting excessively creative or if Tony's pushy or if they zero in on the bulletproof kinks of Steve's and emphasize them) but given how sensitive the flesh-colored tentacles seem to be Bruce isn't surprised: Steve's been wrestling with his self-control all day, and it shows.

More details. Right.

"He isn't panicking," Bruce says, focusing on health first. "And..." A detail he'd missed. "Tony, there's a tentacle wrapped around his penis." So that was where that tentacle had gone, and that was why Steve had suddenly lost what remained of his self-control earlier.

"Oh, cool," Tony says, leaning over to look. "Perfect, hang tight."

"For what?" Bruce asks as Steve whimpers.

"For this," Tony says, and Bruce leans forward in time to see Tony wrap his fingers around the base of the tentacles, where they merge into the skin at the base of Steve's spine.

Steve howls.

His body jolts, tentacles and cock twitching as he (Bruce guesses) tries to come but fails, restrained as he is. Whatever rational thought he'd managed to regain is lost again as he spasms, overwhelmed.

But he doesn't move. Steve doesn't grab for either of them, and he doesn't struggle in Bruce's hold. All of his movements are involuntary ones that he can't control.

"That's good," Tony says, looking over Steve, leaning over him as he threads his fingers through the tentacles. He sorts them, using both hands to lay out which tentacle goes where, working gamely despite the fact that none of them let go of Bruce or Steve and return to Steve's back.

Steve's moaning again, shaking under Bruce's hold. If they talked to him now they wouldn't get through, Bruce knows.

One of the tentacles disrupts Bruce's train of thought entirely, slipping in the front of his pants, abandoning his shirt in favor of squirming under the waistband of his briefs, and Bruce stills as it fits itself around him, winding around his cock twice (testing his self control - he can't, can't let go now) before probing further back, forcing him to spread his legs as it pushes into him, pulsing around his cock as it goes.

"Tony," he says, hanging on for dear life, grip on Steve as much for Steve's benefit as his now, forcing back the arousal and panic and surge of emotion that leads to memory loss and destruction and rage. "It's in...in me." He makes himself finish the sentence.

Tony actually has the good grace to look apologetic and slightly concerned.

"We know that they go limp when he's calm," Tony says, and Bruce sees where this is going.

"Do it," he says, forcing bravery along with control. Taking the time to fight with these things, to pull it out - he might not last that. Steve might not survive that. (Steve is hyperventilating, jerking under his hands now; Bruce understands why.)

It shouldn't be a surprise when Tony kisses him, but it is. Affection is still a foreign concept, one that he's been relearning with Steve and Tony's help.

Tony's grinning when he pulls back, confident as usual, before he bends down to lick at the tip of Steve's cock.

"I think," Bruce says as the tentacles spasm around (in) him. "You might kill him."

"Can't kill a super-soldier with sex," Tony argues, licking again.

Bruce really doesn't know what to say to that. Not when Tony's convincing Steve's tentacle to unwind enough to let Tony take Steve in deeper, sucking hard on his erection.

Steve howls again, finally reaching out with a shaking hand to grab at Tony's shoulder, then at his hair, whining like he doesn't know what to do, pupils blown and Bruce makes a sound because Steve is wrecked, beyond anything they've ever done.

He lets go of Steve's neck, does something he's never done before while Tony makes a choked noise when Steve pushes his head down, forcing him to take more of Steve into his mouth. Bruce hooks fingers through the chain of the dog-tags, dragging it back to put a pressure at Steve's throat, firm. Pushing at a boundary he shouldn't, would never dare to but he's just barely holding his own together.

Steve stills, noises dying in his throat, and something works: the tentacles loosen, they don't go limp, but they loosen enough for Steve to come, and Bruce watches him fall apart, listens to Tony scrabble for air through ill-timed laughter and Steve's semen.

Now the tentacles go loose and limp, and Bruce lets go of Steve's dog-tags to pat at his hair quickly before dragging his pants down and unwinding the tentacle, getting it out of him. (A moment, please, to mourn that god he'd love to let it do what it was doing, he'd love to come off of it, to come to Steve's moans and whimpers, but he can't and he's not even angry about that, not any more.)

Steve sprawls, eyes shut, probably knocked out. It's for the best, Bruce thinks.

"Is he dead?" Tony asks, running a hand over his face to wipe off the semen.

Bruce shakes his head, refastening his pants.

A moment. He hesitates, but it's a long learning process. He leans in to kiss Tony, ignoring the mess.

Steve makes a sound under them, like he's been shot.

Tony laughs into Bruce's mouth, and Bruce lets him push Steve to his back, climbing over him to kiss him too, open-mouthed and sloppy and Bruce will never begrudge them for fitting so well. Not when Tony slides off Steve seconds later to grab a wash-cloth, leaving them alone again.

Steve closes his eyes, spent.

The dog-tags are still pressed up against the hollow of Steve's throat. Bruce lets himself look, but he doesn't touch.

"Bruce?" His voice isn't hoarse, and Bruce wonders at that. Probably the serum showing off again.

"Yes?"

Steve cracks open an eye, a smile on his lips. "If he says anything about round two, kill him."

It feels good to laugh, moreso when Steve raises a hand to pull him down for a kiss.

---
https://zekkass.livejournal.com/459256.html?view=comments#comments
avengers:tony","avengers:bruce","avengers:steve/bruce/tony","avengers:steve","avengers fic","turning fishes into wishes","fic
Okay. So. Me an' @pyrebi went from talking about the difficulties of writing Tony Stark and Dean Winchester IC-ly to me mentioning Steve Rogers/Dean Winchester and that. spiraled.

After a few aborted attempts at figuring out how that'd work, @pyrebi proved herself a genius and here's where the tweets I saved kick in:

pyrebi: NEW PLAN—2014!AU. Power struggles over survivors! Captain fuckin' America can back the fuck off or he'll learn if he's bulletproof.

pyrebi: Damn it, why does everything always devolve to zombie apocalypse hatesex with me.

pyrebi: OMG, and eventually the groups band together for a while, but while Steve's out on recon, alt!Dean shows up. And then Dean gets his neck snapped and the end of the world happens and everything is dead forever! :D ...okay, need a new plan.

zekkass: Steve or any other Avenger shows up while Dean's facing off with Lucifer and change that outcome significantly. (Thor vs Sam!Lucifer)

pyrebi: OMFG YES. And Thor can be all "wtffff happened while I was gone?" AND IT TURNS OUT ANGELS ARE FROM ANOTHER OF THE NINE REALMS Y/N?

zekkass: Y! I like that! :D (epic Thor+Steve+Dean finding and reuniting the Avengers adventures happen then, y/n?)

zekkass: &while it's then not quite end-of-the-world/edge-of-oblivion fumbling/sadness, it's still a long hard road back out of the nightmare

#picturing Dean and Thor standing off re Sam's survival

pyrebi: Ugh, yes, and bb!Dean is all "SAM" and 2014!Dean is so fucking torn and Thor's all "percussive solution is the best solution."

zekkass: ...I'm honestly not sure what Steve would think of this. I mean, besides thinking of Bucky.

pyrebi: I think Steve'd be torn too. Because it's the equivalent of brainwashing--it's not Sam's fault, but the whole world for one man?

zekkass: ..sudden echoes of Thor and Loki here. Hoo.

pyrebi: Both Thor and Dean strike me as the sort of people to be sympathetic to others' brotherly bonds only in rational times.

zekkass: Mm. Then percussion for Sam and Lucifer, and Thor'll take the responsibility for doing what needed to be done?

pyrebi: Like Dean would be all for seeing Loki's head on a spike and Thor would think Sam is a threat best seen neutralized.

pyrebi: Well, I mean, I doubt Dean's protests would have an impact, but Steve could probably stop him from percussioning Sam to bits.

zekkass: But there's the question: would Steve stop him?

pyrebi: This conundrum is the best conundrum. I guess it really depends on if Steve and Dean established a trenches-rapport earlier.

zekkass: Depends on that, and depends on if Steve took away any lessons from their encounter with Loki. #norightanswer #whatwouldtonydo

pyrebi: I think, for the sake of the rebuild in this particular scenario, Steve would have to come down on the side of saving Sam.

zekkass: Then he talks Thor down, and then we get adventures for everyone. \\o/ #zombiefighting

zekkass: I'm picturing a kind of Natasha and Clint VS the world situation, at least to wherever they wound up.

pyrebi: That's EXACTLY what happened. Killin' zombies, living off found items, being badass. Maybe they were on a mission when it happened?

zekkass: Yes, that works. :D Now picturing Clint almost shooting Dean before Steve goes 'waitaminute HEY GUYS'

pyrebi: I'm trying to decide if everyone is all "wtf how are we back together" or just coolly "of course we all survived, we're Avengers."

zekkass: Of course, there has to be at least one 'I thought you were dead' / '*eyebrow raise*' scene. (Steve + Natasha in my head there)

pyrebi: I think another question is "where the hell have Tony and Bruce been?" I imagine Tony has bunkers for things like this.

pyrebi: I'm torn between Bruce working on a croat cure and just being perpetually hulked out until he's found.

zekkass: Having really really really stressful nights going between bunkers trying to a) help people, b) make a cure and c) stay alive.

pyrebi: AWWWW. Of course Steve thinks everyone is dead! That's happened to him before--all alone in a wildly different and dangerous world.

zekkass: :( poor bb. (so it's really nice in this instance to give him his team back)

pyrebi: Imagine how relieved he'd be, that bright spot in the middle of all the shit. And then ALL of them alive, ALL OF THEM. ;_________;

zekkass: ;_____; all the tears for this. Just...Bruce and Tony showing up at the camp one day, carrying supplies from the last bunker and their in-progress cures and if Steve's on watch he goes 'wait' and can't believe it for a solid minute and then Clint thumps him and opens the gate before trouble comes down and then - well, Tony never turns down hugs, once he's proven that he's not a monster or a dream - same for Bruce, and then jawdrops from Bruce and Tony as Thor sticks his head out

pyrebi: How did they find them? Was it dumb luck? Did they catch a glimpse of Steve and flip out, thinking they were the last sane men?

zekkass: Well - if Steve's staying with Dean's camp / or the remnants of it, and if they broadcast that survivors should come to them then Bruce insists they do yet another good act and bring along supplies for the survivors / see if they need a doctor because while Bruce is more prone to Hulking out these days Tony's pretty good at getting the Hulk directed away from him/civilians. and Bruce can't hide in a bunker and not help, and Tony can't risk losing him, so... so - Tony has a radio rigged, they hear about this camp, they finally move out to check it, and :O the gang's all here

pyrebi: Okay, I literally just went "eeeeeeeeeee" and clapped my hands. Ugh, post-apocalyptic reunions are my FAVORITE.

pyrebi: fffffff yes. And Tony can be all "shoulda known you'd be out roughing it, Cap" but is totally so happy and touchy-feely.

zekkass: Did you see Thor? Do you remember him being found by the Warriors Three & Sif? I expect that kind of thing from him, too.

zekkass: Dean shows up, goes 'who are these people' and Thor goes 'these are my friends / shieldbrothers' with Steve backing him up on this

pyrebi: YES I LOVE THAT PART OF THOR. "MY FRIENDS, THIS IS GOOD!" Ugh, Thor would be hugging and thumping everybody.

pyrebi: I really, really love the idea of Bruce hulking during the initial outbreak and not being able to dehulk due to constant threats so he ends up just smashing croats for weeks and weeks until Tony happens to pick up his signal and goes to fetch his buddy.

zekkass: In which case Tony works alone on a cure / scans the radio for camps so he can deliver supplies (Iron Man armor still working?)

zekkass: And then there can be recovery!Bruce, who's weakened due to prolonged hulking and Tony being totally freaked out and stressed.

zekkass: Excellent, yes. This all goes down before Thor shows up / they find the team, I assume

pyrebi: Of course! And I assume the suits are still working. Tony probably has many by 2014, and I'm sure he has a ton of arc generators.

zekkass: Still picturing Tony & Bruce walking towards the gates together, lugging supplies / briefcase armor along, b/c no panicking civvies

zekkass: Iron Man may be bulletproof, but they really shouldn't be wasting bullets on him. Best not to spook 'em.

pyrebi: Well, if we assume he started near Malibu and has been bunker-hopping since, it'd make sense that he's JUST NOW finding the others.

pyrebi: I think that's best. At that point, most of the bunkers are probably down, and the suits highly damaged. Packed armor is smart.

zekkass: So he goes along checking bunkers/salvaging/dispenses supplies to those in need, and finally arrives in a place near the Hulk. Then as Bruce recovers they travel the rest of the way towards wherever Steve & co are

pyrebi: Yup. And if we go with Detroit as the last known location for Steve's merry band, it'd put the meet-up somewhere in the midwest.

zekkass: See, now, this is why zombie apocalypse AUs are awesome. because reunions and that tiny glimmer of hope...

pyrebi: I love it, it's the best. Just that unbelievable spark of joy. Like, I nearly cried when Rick found his family on Walking Dead.

zekkass: And...in a way, I think having superheroes mixed in helps even more, b/c I can't help but think - once they're together, nothing can stop them from saving the world somehow.

pyrebi: I agree! If we go the mythical route, Thor can neutralize the archangel threat. Bruce and Tony fix the plague. Steve coordinates

zekkass: Natasha and Clint keep the Croats off of them while Tony and Bruce work their science magic.

pyrebi: Those two were BORN to be pointmen during a zombie apocalypse. They're probably keeping score with each other.

zekkass: They shout numbers at each other during battle/during watch/etc, which is at first confusing and then ':O how many' for bystanders

pyrebi: I do feel bad for Dean and company, though--now they have to deal with the full deck of Avengers. xD

zekkass: 2014!Cas VS Tony, go.

pyrebi: Only a "vs" in the sense of "who can have the most orgasms, go."

zekkass: and Sam is bundled up at one end of camp, with Thor on watch 90% of the time in case Lucifer tries something. unless Thor could literally burn/remove an angel from a vessel. So Sam's Lucifer-free

pyrebi: YESSSSS. And Sam is all "I'm me, for real" and slowly he and Thor kind of get to talking, suspiciously at first.

pyrebi: I mean, he might have to pop back to Asgard for the info/equipment to do that. Eeeek, that would be tense times.

zekkass: Oooh, yes. Thor will be gone for [x] days to find a way to rid Sam of Lucifer, and it's the most tense the camp has been since before Thor showed up period.

pyrebi: Thor could have him bound somehow, but still there, and everybody's at each others' throats, and they have to set up watches... ...not just to protect the world from Lucifer but also to protect Sam from people who just want him dead and gone.

zekkass: I expect Dean(s?) take up most of the watches, because Sam is his brother and his responsibility, damn it

pyrebi: Oh for sure. But Steve takes some too. Imagine him thwarting an attempt to kill Sam? Dean would be sick over it but SO SO GRATEFUL.

zekkass: Yes. Yes yes yes. This. Especially since this is the second time Steve's saved Sam - he pulled Thor off of him earlier

zekkass: Hey, is bb!Dean still around, or is he gonna come back to Zach and do a 'HAH nice try buddy'

pyrebi: I think he probably gets pulled back in media res, looking like things are going to end badly, for Zach's purposes.

zekkass: Right. Seconds before Thor appears, Dean gets pulled back. Sorry, dude.

zekkass: and then 2014!Dean gets to have a private moment of 'oh you son of a bitch' to himself re: Zach and this thing from long ago

pyrebi: Ohhhhhh. Oh my god, that is so good. Yes yes yes. Dean's been here before, he knows how it goes...and then, and then...

zekkass: And then this smiling god comes from the sky.

pyrebi: -rolls around- C-c-c-combo breaker! It's all new from there, baby.

zekkass: In the best possible way. :D I love this AU

pyrebi: Me too~ OH! How popular would Clint be, with his nearly silent weapons? Every morning he has to go out to retrieve arrows, Pulling them out of eyesockets and shit. Luckily he has Nat to cover him when he's outside of shelter.

[...]

pyrebi: I also like that we were so invested in figuring out the plotting that we utterly failed to insert any ships. xD

zekkass: lolololol well Avengers/Avengers reunion cuddlepile, and then Cas invites himself, and it spirals?

pyrebi: Oh 2014!Cas, what will we do with you. Oh! There's someone who probably got spared by Steve's existence!

zekkass: Steve wouldn't let them get killed :D

pyrebi: Yup! FFFFFFF--maybe 2014!Dean sent Steve with the others on that suicide mission except he actually helped them all survive it!

zekkass: Steve: more competent than Dean realized. *way* more competent.

pyrebi: -flail- Maybe Steve hasn't exactly told anyone he's Captain America, because that title seems kind of silly these days.

zekkass: ohoho, yes yes yes. Does he have his shield? (did he repaint it/scuff the paint?)

zekkass: Steve hasn't explained who he is because - look. If Captain America showed up I'd look to him for solutions to EVERYTHING.

zekkass: and he doesn't have...enough, so to speak. So he goes as Steve and does what he can.

pyrebi: And this is just like...oh. Okay, um. That dude ain't normal. And he's friends with the sky-dude with the hammer WHAT IS GOING ON.

zekkass: ahahaha, yes, exactly. doesn't help when Thor keeps referring to him as Captain. (then Nat n' Clint show up and welp)

pyrebi: Oh, that's gorgeous. He's overwhelmed, he can't be the Captain. Maybe he loses the shield and it's found/returned to him later?

zekkass: I'm seeing a private post-Thor-arrival moment between Steve and Dean. 'Okay, 'just Steve', who are you really?'

zekkass: Oh, I like that. No shield, not until...now I'm picturing a moment where Natasha and Clint find it and think 'oh no'

zekkass: But they take it with them anyways - it's a good shield. It saves their lives a few times, and is a great umbrella - and okay, Clint shouldn't have said that, bad time for a joke when Steve's almost tearing up at the sight of the thing

pyrebi: THAT'S WHAT I WAS THINKING. And they arrive and Steve's thrilled to see them and THEY HAVE HIS SHIELD and it's almost too much.

zekkass: and then literally a day or two later Tony and Bruce show up and it really is too much

pyrebi: Oh god, can you imagine them finding it, and realizing there might be a croat out there that used to be Steve? That one day soon they might have to put Captain America down? And they don't talk about it, but it sits with them sometimes at night.

zekkass: They never, *ever* bring that up to Steve himself. He just gets bonus protective-ness from them / relief that he's fine

pyrebi: It's this domino effect, like they're supposed to be together. Steve's alone for months, and then in the course of a week, boom.

zekkass: Now I get to reflect on Fury's words from the end of the movie - something along the lines of 'when we need them they'll come'

pyrebi: Ugh, and they do! They come, despite reason, despite the odds, and the world has a chance again. Dean just...it boggles him.

zekkass: Good things NEVER happen to Winchesters, see.

pyrebi: No, they really don't. But for these fuckers? But the world didn't end, and he got Sam back, and maybe, just maybe, it'll be okay.

zekkass: And I'd like to think that for once - they catch a break. Nothing goes horrifyingly wrong along the road back to sanity.

And then we went to bed.
