Apparently it has. I don't know why I'm here instead of on DW, but whatever. I've been doing okay, for anyone wondering — actually, great? I've been doing college, I've been reading, I've been doing small amounts of writing.
College: I might be done next year, with an AA instead of a BA. Which is fine, I need out of the system and I realized that math courses were digging into my PTSD pretty hard. It's been amazing how much energy I've gotten back just from not...taking stats anymore.
Reading: over a hundred books this year. I now keep an updated goodreads and write reviews occasionally. It is my favorite hobby and it does me so much good...and financial harm, because I buy too many books. Part of my over-buying was due to math stress though, so that should be coming under control.
Well... I'll try to write more updates here more often. But now my dog is calling and it's time to go.
Hello, journal, haven't seen or used you in a while. Writing this year was posted almost entirely to AO3, so using numbers from there.
Total number of completed stories:
Fourteen. That's...a lot less than the number of 100+ back in 2012. To be fair, most of these are mammoth fics, and few are smaller than 500 words. ... Actually, none are. The writing fragments didn't get posted, see, and I didn't do any drabbles or comment-fics, really.
Total word count:
65,010 words posted on AO3, not counting any fragments I've put on my tumblr or left in the WIP pile. Considering that I like most of what I wrote this year? I'm pretty proud of it!
Overall Thoughts
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
I don't know what I was expecting. It's a lot - I was not expecting that many longfics, or was I expecting...so few smaller fics. I usually have a lot of ficlets and drabbles cluttering things up, but nope. Not this year. Huh.
What's your own favorite story of the year?
say nothing; share nothing
Hands down my favorite fic I've written this year - I adore bits of my other stuff, but this is the one I'm most proud of. It was written in the zone, it was magical, I loved it. I also did something I haven't done before with it - I wrote a first draft, then stripped it of all lines that were clunky and rewrote it from there. And it was miles better than it had any right to be.
It also helps that I loooooooooooooooooove soulbonds and soulbonding in general. :)
( More questions under here...Collapse )
Short version:
I like what I wrote this year, I came up with a lot of ideas this year, and I hope to do more this year. Also, heeeey let's do original stuff this year. Certainly can't hurt!

dark_bingo.I've recently discovered I've got a thing - a big thing - for identity kink. Marvel / MCU isn't conducive to this as most to all of their heroes are out and public, but I can't help but gravitate to fics that explore the AU idea of 'what if Tony hadn't outted himself in MCU' / 'is Captain America really Steve Rogers?' and so on.
There's a modern 'superheroes' AU I've been meaning to take and flesh out for months now. Captain America and the Winter Soldier, a pair of Brooklyn vigilantes keeping the place crime-free. Domino masks are awful for secret disguises, but it's a superhero AU so it runs on Clark-Kent's-glasses-work logic, and I am okay with that!
[insert 'aaa rambly' fears here; insert reminder that this is a journal, so I'm allowed to be incoherent]
Another genre I've been wanting to write more in - I always want to write more in here - is space, sci-fi, etcetera. Starships and aliens and space anomalies and I just love it, love it.
Problem is, whenever I go to write space aus I get bogged down in details, or want to go for grand plots, and it's the usual problem with huge universe-changing aus - I go for grand scale and have trouble following through.
(Fantasy AU only pulled through 'cause I didn't write out the second half of the epic, see.)
That's something I've noticed about myself in writing, well, anything - need a universe. It can't be an isolated random scene or I get frozen up quite badly. Why are Steve and Tony arguing? Need a reason before I can go to the PWP. Or if I want to write, eh, reporter AU, then I need a context.
Probably not unusual for writers but it does bog me down when I'm starting a thing.
On an entirely different topic, I saw the 2007 movie Zodiac and loved it more than I thought I would. I keep running into contemplation about Paul Avery and how loose ends can haunt you and I just. This close to writing something for it, frankly. (Or reporter / cop AU in general.)

I am pleased to report that all is still well here. I know I post infrequently despite wanting to post more often, but - well.

I'm still reading, I'm still writing, I'm still doing my thing.
My cats are well, my family is well...
In the end let's go back to the most important thing to talk about here: my writing. I'm slowly chiseling out the details and plot hooks of an original novel that I want to write - I want to do it justice, and I want the characters to take me away from here, and to that end my craft needs to be better.
There are themes (identity, what ties people together) and character concepts - I realized recently that I am a sucker for high concept stories, which...well, how do make plot interesting without losing coherency? And all that.
...It's slow work, but steady. And meanwhile I keep writing fic, because it's like an old pair of boots: fits perfectly and gets you places.
Still heavily into Avengers, still waiting for Captain America 2: Winter Soldier, still waiting for the next issue of Fearless Defenders to come out...
Little last piece of happiness: Shin Megami Tensei IV is getting a US release this summer, which is the best news I could've hoped for.
(Funny how I go from serious talk straight to geekery. I'm glad I'm like that.)
Hindsight is perfect, painfully so. Why did I have a mental / emotional collapse back in '06? Because I didn't trust the therapist I had at the time / went off my meds / was almost literally friendless / my internet use was highly limited so my primary way of de-stressing was almost gone / middle of Winter, when everything is worse.
Could I have prevented it? ...Maybe if I were who am I now, but back then - I don't know. I don't think so. Rereading my LJ entries and journal entries from the time show me to be painfully immature. (...likely I'll read this entry in a few years and think the same thing)
It has been worth doing. I remember some of '09 now, and '10, if imperfectly. Not that it's pleasant to go back and remember IRL events during some of the roughest years of my life - that's - it feels like it's an exaggeration, or that I'm getting melodramatic, but...from my POV, I was screwed up, in a bad place, and I'm just glad my thoughts never truly turned to suicide or self-harm - only escapism.
...
As for where I am now - I'm happy. I'm not in a perfect place, I still need to mature and get better at all kinds of things, but - I have the time and space for that, and most of all I'm happy, which is the most important thing.
I can't tell you guys how glad I am I know you. Some of you have literally kept me going, and I - I'm grateful.
(Now how likely is it that this'll go unnoticed, because I put it here instead of on tumblr, or twitter...? Ah well, who cares. It goes here. On DW, on LJ, because this silly thing has done so much for me.)

Please don't rec S. King or Koontz, I've read some of their stuff and they didn't click with me. And when I say horror - well, anything scary will do but if I must narrow it down, supernatural horror (ghost stories!) would be great.

I'm also in the middle of The Russians by Hedrick Smith - fascinating look at all aspects of Russian life in the 60s/70s. Written by a reporter who lived there for a while, and it's just. Fascinating. (Also, apparently the copy I'm reading came from my grandma, so it's been neat to let her know I'm reading it.)
And finally I'm reading Dan Abnett's Gaunt's Ghosts books - I'm in the early stages of the third book, Necropolis, and it's. It's so grimdark. I love it. I'm prepared for everyone to die, and with that mindset firmly in place, I love it. Great military-type novels in a sci-fi grimdark universe. (Warhammer 40k, to be precise, but you barely need to know anything other than the forces of Chaos = bad.) I have to hand it to Abnett, though - I've never seen a plot wrapped up so quickly. The second book, Ghostmaker - literally five pages and he wrapped up the plot, resolved the loose ends, and in the process didn't confuse or irritate me. It was a good ending. Just. Five pages. I'm still shocked at that. (I'm reading these books in omnibus format, btw)

The fics recced within contain Steve/Tony, Clint/Coulson, a few Steve/Thors, and some gen fics. A mixed bag, in other words, with genres all over the place. Please enjoy!
||
Making It Work by Pandelion.
'Coulson is Fury's daemon.' Yes, it's a His Dark Materials AU. It's fantastic. Clint/Coulson, excellent handling of the idea, and I adore everyone's daemons. :3
Bonus: if you liked the fic, the author wrote some nifty headcanon thoughts about it, too. Worth a read!
The Twice-Told Tale by arysteia.
Steve/Tony fic wherein Tony falls for Steve, then falls for him again. Has the kind of IC writing that makes me hate the author because I may never write as well. Oh, and the time-travel bit is utterly brilliant.
well, let the drum beat drop by jonesandashes and pollyrepeat.
Gen team-bonding fic set post-movie involving various meals together, a bacon freezer that is literally full of bacon, and yoga pants. It's glorious.
10, 9, 8, car by pollyrepeat.
Clint/Coulson Groundhog Day/Mystery Spot AU that is plotty and wonderful and I don't have enough brilliant adjectives. Coulson's on a mission and keeps dying and Clint is getting sick of time-loops. And Coulson dying. And waking up to a godawful pop song every morning.
Coffee Cup Lullaby by ashinan.
Steve/Tony, Tony is shrunk down to be about three inches tall and he hates it.
Lust's Effect is Tempest After Sun by xDinahQueenx.
Steve/Tony sexpollen phonesex armor-is-involved fic. You already know if you want to read it or not.
Instant karma's gonna get you by dorcas_gustine.
Steve/Tony fic wherein things go badly for Tony whenever Steve's disappointed in him. And the effect stacks. Poor Tony. ;) Set in the Marvel Adventures: Avengers verse.
Speaking in Code by tsukinofaerii.
Tony is bored. .--. .... . .- .-. .... .. -- .-.-.- (Phear him.)
Tony texts Steve a whole bunch and gets into morse code. :D
Man on Top by Amuly.
Steve/Tony PWP involving grappling and Tony being a sore loser.
A Week in the Life of Highly Respected SHIELD Agent Phil Coulson by boombangbing.
Exactly what it says on the tin - gen and lovely. :3
Baby Daddy Drama by sparrowshellcat.
Howlingly funny fic where Loki shows up and apparently is pregnant...but who's the father? (Most of the team might be the father, some of the X-Men might be the father...it just gets worse and worse.)
Worth a read even if you're not a fan of the pairings. :)
Deep Waters by AlchemyAlice.
Truly excellent fic that's an IC look at Tony's PTSD after Afghanistan. It's Steve/Tony and just...hurts in all the right ways.
When the finally come to destroy the earth (they'll have to go through you first) by AlchemyAlice.
Batman crossover - Tony and Bruce went to the same boarding schools and are fellow billionaires and superheroes. Brilliant. (Has background Steve/Tony.)
I've got your words in me by eleanor_lavish.
Clint/Coulson, one of the two fics to sell me on the pairing. Excellent characterization.
I Trust You to Kill Me by ghostrunner.
The other Clint/Coulson fic that sold me on the pairing so that I would go on to read others. Amazing first-time fic, brilliant characterization, the works.
Something Quiet and Minor and Peaceful and Slow by torakowalski.
A sweet, sweet Clint/Coulson fic. Exactly what it says on the tin.
(First Impressions Are) A Work in Progress by porthos.
Steve/Tony fic that is an excellent look at how they might hate each other before they work past that. Slowly. Kinda. <3

Steve/Thor PWP that is hot in all of the right ways. Nnnf.
Steve/Thor ficlet by ravenspear.
Short, hot. Involves sparring. :9

He opened his mouth, intending to reassure Steve, but what came out was, “God, I really want to blow you.” Panic immediately twisted his stomach, but the Never mind, shit, just forget I said that stalled at the complete and utter incomprehension on Steve’s face.
“Blow me where?” Steve asked. Tony opened and closed his mouth, for once speechless. Steve gave him an uncertain smile. “Is this another superpower or something?”

Guide me tenderly, do not haul me about like a sack of potatoes." He took a firm step backwards, and Steve obediently followed him. Fury had been surprisingly receptive to the idea of teaching Steve to dance, and had found space on his calender the very next day.
It's also - the team coming together, Tony learning about Steve and Steve learning about the future and everything - it's wonderful. It's plotty. It has Fury teaching Steve to dance. What more do I need to say?

This this this. I love this fic. I could write a love letter to this fic. It's - okay. First I need to explain Marvel Noir. That's a comic 'verse wherein no one has powers/kind of? Point is: Noir!Tony is a 1930s/40s Indiana Jones type who goes on adventures and gets them published in a month comic magazine and this fic is the perfect meld between that and Captain America canon. (As Captain America fits perfectly in the Noir verse without tweaking.)
Tony meets tiny!Steve because Steve's a part-time janitor to pay his way through college, promptly hires him after spotting his sketches, then befriends him, then - plot happens. Or, well, the fic starts with Tony crashing somewhere in Germany and getting rescued by Captain America. Who reminds him of his artist friend tiny!Steve. But there are Germans with evil plans that they need to stop, so it's a bad idea to stop and puzzle out why Cap reminds him of tiny!Steve.
It's glorious in other words.

Ready, Fire, Aim by gyzym.
This, if I may be so bold, is my favorite Steve/Tony fic in general, long with its two sequels/side stories. It chronicles Steve and Tony going from hating each other to not, with Thor's birthday along the way and the Avengers moving into the mansion and it's just a wonderful work.

This is a Golden Age Era fic, where Tony runs around keeping the fact that he's Iron Man secret from the Avengers - Iron Man claims to be Tony Stark's bodyguard, see - and quite frankly I love it when Tony reveals/is found out, and this one has a line I've memorized:
Tony sighed, closing his eyes, and finally, finally managed to bring his hand down from the betraying position: Arm straight out, hand up, palm outward, directly facing toward Steve... exactly as it would be to fire a repulsor blast.
Beneath The Armor by Nix.
This is also a Golden Age Era fic, and it feels like you could easily fit it in with one of those early issues. It's a lovely character study, too, and just...so charming. :3
