
Martina Kastnerová
Dr. Martina Kastnerová (ORCID: 0000-0002-0142-3924) currently works as a researcher and senior lecturer (i.e. assistant professor) at the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts, University of West Bohemia, Pilsen, Czech Republic, where she teaches the courses Hermeneutics and the Theory of Interpretation or Art in a Cultural Context etc. Her major interests relate to the Sidney circle, genesis of Philip Sidneyʼs poetic project on the basis of their communication with intellectuals on the continent. Last year (2024) she finished the translation of Michal Slavataʼs Hussite speech with a contextual introduction with her team for Reformation journal and contributed to the special issue of Sidney Journal “Penshurst and Beyond” (edited by Alison Findlay and current Philip Sidney). During this year she also continued in her research related to the topic in Wolfenbüttel (Land Niedersachsen Fellowship), Munich (GER), and Durham (Barker Fellowship) (UK). Besides her research interests and teaching, her first collection of poetry will be published at the beginning of this year 2025. Recently, she was also awarded with a three-month scholarship for the year 2025 to an excellent doctoral researcher from Central and Eastern Europe to conduct her research in Gotha, Halle, Wolfenbüttel (GER), supported by Dorothee Wilms Foundation.

Anotace Philip Sidney (1554-1586), anglický básník významně utvářející podobu alžbětinské literární kultury a anglické poetiky, podobně jako další tehdejší mladí muži absolvoval po opuštění oxfordské Christ Church tzv. kavalírskou cestu. Směr jeho cesty byl ambiciózní, totiž přes oceán na evropský kontinent, původně do Francie (Paříž). V důsledku dobových náboženských tenzí, ale i z politických důvodů, se nicméně dostává do dalších evropských zemí a prostoru střední Evropy (1572-1575). Tato studie se zaměřuje na Sidneyho kontakty se středoevropskými intelektuály a jeho zájem o přírodní vědy, konkrétně na osobnost Carola Clusia (Charles de l’Écluse) (1526-1609), významného botanika a lékaře, který byl aktivním členem intelektuálního kruhu kolem Langueta a vídeňského kroužku (Tadeáš Hájek, Georg Purkircher, Tomáš Jordán a další), přičemž zamýšlí osvětlit jeho vztah k Philipu Sidneymu.
The paper examines the influence of Johannes Crato and the seminal treatises on medicine and botany written by leading Central European scholars during the early modern period on the erudition and genesis of poetic work of the Elizabethan poet Philip Sidney. Johannes Crato (1519-1585), later von Krafftheim, who originally comes from Breslau, is known to be the physician of all three Habsburg emperors, i.e., Ferdinand I., Maximilian II. and Rudolph II., and is a part of the Camerarius-Languet circle. As such he had a huge influence within the European intellectual network.
The study deals with the poetry of Robert Sidney, the younger brother of the famous Elizabethan figure Philip Sidney. His poetry is of an exceptional sort, sophisticated, and elaborate, despite the fact that it has not been known that Robert Sidney was a poet until his handwritten notebook was published in 1984. However, the most original contribution of the author consists in his effort to disguise his own political frustration as a conventional (platonic) love poetry. Thus, this paper examines Robert Sidneyʼs life and career, mirrored also in his correspondence with his wife Barbara Gamage Sidney and his private poetry. Nevertheless, the main part is dedicated to the analysis and translation of his poems in the above-mentioned context.
The study deals with the main tenets of the Elizabethan Poetics, as 1) the concept of poesy as creating fictional worlds and the concept of poet as a “maker”, 2) moral and social role of poetry and the concept of “doctrine by ensample”, 3) unity of poetics and rhetoric, 4) authenticity of emotions through poetry versus erudition, originality versus imitation of classical models. Thus, English poetry becomes the important device of establishing cultural and social identity of Elizabethan society in the context of dealing with classical and continental examples.
The study intends to clarify the process of forming of Sidneyan literary cult as a part of (Sidneyʼs) family legacy based on the the literary activities of Sidneyʼs sister Lady Mary Sidney Herbert, countess of Pembroke, and his niece Lady Mary Wroth, daughter of his younger brother Robert. Mary Sidney Herbert throughout her literary career sings a swan song of her brother, Mary Wroth creates an imaginative world of free love choice and happy endings and her literary career is based on the well-established cult of Sidneyʼs name.
