Ohio or Bust

So, we are heading down to Ohio tomorrow. I am not looking forward to the oh so long drive of 16 hours, but do want to see my family and old friends.  We haven't been home in 2  years-it feels like longer though...  We should be there sometime on Sunday.  Of course I am completely stressed out and worried about leaving my babies, but it will all work out in the end. Ohio here we come!

Lost related

They were discussing LOST on NPR yesterday, mainly about how diverse the cast was. I couldn't agree more.  Where else can you find so many characters of so many different races/cultures on one show?  No, this season of Survivor doesn't count, and that is a whole different subject that I don't want to get into, thank you.  I like the fact that they do not play on stereotypes and even have mixed couples (which is STILL rare on television and movies-hello???)  I like that the female characxters are strong too.  Now, all they need is some gay characters to round out the show!  Anyway, just my two cents on that.  Now, I must go to my volunteer job...

Job (In)Security

Oh the mad mad world of nonprofits...  We got a disturbing but necessary email yesterday from the treasurer of the organization I work for.  I have begun to panic a tad. Here is a sampling of the email:

"At this point, we are able to meet payroll for 2 more months--September and October."

" We need to bring in $6
,
000 each and every month consistently--the rest will be covered by various grants, give or take."

"At this point, we can raise this money a.) from outside donors or b.) from ourselves. Otherwise, we close our doors.  We have a wonderful staff and board with an exceptional set of programs on topics of critical importance to all Vermonters and I cannot bear to contemplate the last possibility, but contemplate it we must. It will be a reality in 2 months."

This is what happens to nonprofits who have board members that are afraid to ask people for money! Hello- that is one of your main jobs- to raise money!  I just don't understand... Not only will closing put the 3 of us employees out on the street, it will mean closing an organization that has been around for 50 years, and has so much potential. It is very sad... It is very sad for me too- It's not like I have some kind of savings set aside for situations like this.  I did have a second interview yesterday at another nonprofit. It pays pretty well, is full time, and even has health benefits! So, I guess for now, I will just keep my fingers crossed that everything will work out...

Happy Happy Birthday...

to one of the most wonderful, caring, beautiful people I know!  Happy Birthday

Partial victory?

The FDA approved the "emergency contraception" pill, Plan B, to be sold over the counter to women 18 and older.  While this is certainly a step in the right direction, it is not enough.  What about teenagers? With as many teen pregnancies that we have in this country, you'd think everyone would be all for this.  Do they truly believe that having Plan B available for teens would make them have sex more? So very crazy...

While all of this is going on, there are STILL pharmacists that are refusing to fill birth control prescriptions! Click here to help...
