MOSQUE PLAN TYPOLOGY
ABSTRACT
Lake Van, which is located in Eastern Anatolia Basin of Turkey's geography comprises the provinces of Van, Bitlis
Hakkari, and Muş. The region, in terms of the historical process and cultural heritage, has demonstrated many important
cultural accumulations beginning from the prehistoric times, particularly Urartian civilization, to the present. The artifacts
from these periods in the basin have an important place. These are, in particular, the mosques, madrasas, inns, baths, tombs
bridges and many other religious and social architectural works revealing the revival of the region.
It is understood that the first mosque examples in the region started to be seen alongside the Seljuks beginning from
the middle of the 12th century. With the Seljuk period, the courtyard, nave, iwan and the front part of the mihrab or its dome
become prominent in determining the typology of the mosque plan. The naves can be arranged transversely or longitudinally
the courtyard may be in the middle or north of the sanctum (harim), the iwan mainly appear in the form of four iwans
arrangements around the courtyard, and the front part of the mihrab is often marked by a dome. The presence and
arrangement of these elements within the mosque, with the examples in the provinces of Van, Bitlis, and Muş, accordingly
will be evaluated by making a new typology study. The most important of these are Van Ulu Mosque, Bitlis Ulu Mosque
Adilcevaz Ulu Mosque, Gevaş İzzettin Şir Mosque, Muş Bulanık Esenlik Village Mosque, and Ahlat Emir Bayındır Mosque
Within the scope of this proceeding, the plans and architectural features of the mosques built in the Lake Van Basin
between the 12th and 15th centuries will be given, and their classification on the basis of their stylistic features and typology
will be made. At the same time, the interaction of the mosques survived from the Seljuk Period (Ahlatşahlar-Dilmaç
Principality), İlhanlı Period and Akkoyunlu Principality Period with the formations in the Islamic mosque architecture
outside the local, environmental and region and the positions of these mosques in the Lake Van Basin will be mentioned.
