The church of Agios Nikolaos, the katholikon of a ruined Byzantine monastery in the locality call... more The church of Agios Nikolaos, the katholikon of a ruined Byzantine monastery in the locality called “Malagari” of Perachora, is a cross-in-square building of the contracted type with a vaulted narthex at its west end. Τwo burial sites, a tomb in the form of an arcosolium and a grave, were formed in the blind arch of the north and south walls of the narthex respectively, belonging to the monks Sophronios and Dionysios Kalozoes, whose portraits have been painted in close relation to the burials. The church was completed in two phases within the 13th century and preserves wall-paintings in the sanctuary and the narthex. Based on stylistic criteria, the wall-paintings should be dated between 1260 and 1280. Sophronios Kalozoes was the donor of the programme of the narthex, in which he was buried; however, taking into consideration the completion of the painting of the church in short time, he could actually be the donor of the sanctuary’s paintings as well.

One of the most interesting Byzantine monuments of Corinthia is the thirteenth-century church of ... more One of the most interesting Byzantine monuments of Corinthia is the thirteenth-century church of Saint Nicholas at Malagari, the katholikon of a ruined Byzantine monastery, with wall-paintings dated to the thirteenth century, after 1260. In the iconographic programme of the narthex have been included the funerary representations of two monks, Sophronios and Dionysios Kalozoes, members of the same family, most probably a father and son. Sophronios was a high-ranking monk and made a donation to the monastery which can be connected to the expansion of the katholikon to the west and its decoration with wall-paintings, whereas Dionysios was a low-ranking monk. Both of them were buried in the narthex of the katholikon. The two monks, as well as their last name Kalozoes, are recorded here for the first time.

The interior surfaces of its walls preserve their Byzantine paintings, which are partially visible under the coat of plaster that covers most of them. The paintings exhibit affinity with wall-paintings of churches in the Peloponnese (neighbouring Laconia included), and can be dated to the last quarter of the thirteenth century.

Η εικόνα της ένθρονης βρεφοκρατούσας Παναγίας (Εικ. 1, 2) εντοπίστηκε το 2008 στον ναό των Εισοδί... more Η εικόνα της ένθρονης βρεφοκρατούσας Παναγίας (Εικ. 1, 2) εντοπίστηκε το 2008 στον ναό των Εισοδίων της Θεοτόκου στον οικισμό της Καλλονής (Πέρπενης) στον Πάρνωνα 1 , αναρτημένη ως δεσποτική στο τέμπλο, ξεχωρίζοντας για την πρωιμότερη τέχνη της μεταξύ των εικόνων του. Χάρη στο ενδιαφέρον της τέως Προϊσταμένης της 5ης Εφορείας Βυζαντινών Αρχαιοτήτων κ. Κ. Διαμαντή η εικόνα μεταφέρθηκε άμεσα στο Εργαστήριο Συντήρησης στον Μυστρά, όπου και συντηρήθηκε το 2009 από τον συντηρητή κ. Π. Τότση· εκεί βρίσκεται έως σήμερα. Η εικόνα, ξακρισμένη στην άνω και κάτω πλευρά, πιθα-νότατα για να προσαρμοστεί στο νεότερο τέμπλο, έχει διαστάσεις 97×63,5×2 εκ. Τρεις σανίδες καλά διατηρημένες, που στερεώνονται με δύο καρφωτά τρέσα, αποτελούν τον ξύλινο φορέα στον οποίο έχει χαραχτεί προπαρασκευαστικό σχέδιο και έχει απλωθεί ύφασμα. Πριν από τη συντήρησή της (Εικ. 2) η εικόνα διατηρούνταν σε γενικά καλή κατάσταση, παρά τις ρωγμές στα σημεία ένωσης των σανίδων και μικρές απώλειες της ζωγραφικής επιφάνειας κυρίως στους αρχαγγέλους Μιχαήλ και Γαβριήλ στις άνω γωνίες, ενώ αποτέλεσμα καύσης ήταν η περιορισμένης έκτασης σκούρα επιφάνεια στο αριστερό χέρι της Παναγίας, που διακρίνεται ακό-1 Την αυτοψία στον ναό πραγματοποίησα κατά την υπηρεσία μου ως αρχαιολόγου στην 5η Εφορεία Βυζαντινών Αρχαιοτήτων. Since the foundation of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Corinthia in October 2014, its qualified p... more Since the foundation of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Corinthia in October 2014, its qualified personnel have been entrusted with the documentation and conservation of a considerable number of religious heirlooms. These heirlooms are dated between the early 18th century and the first decades of the 20th century, with the exception of one icon of the 17th century. A group of 12 objects have already been conserved, a procedure that has offered crucial data as far as their dating and creation is concerned. Five of these objects, the most interesting in terms of iconography and chronology, are published here, along with all the valuable information on their conservation. These include a) a 17th-century icon of the Virgin Portaitissa probably by a workshop of the Mount Athos, b) a triptych of 1711 by the same Macedonian workshop as an icon of the Deesis and saints now in the Oikonomopoulos Collection (Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki), c) an icon of the Virgin of the Passion with seven prefigurations of the Virgin, dated to 1767, with unique iconography, probably made in an Ionian Island workshop, d) a triptych enkolpion of carved wood with silver frame, dating to the second half of the 18th century, and e) a wooden replica of the larnax with the relic of Saint Dionysios of Zakynthos, dated to the late 19th century with a 20th century representation of the saint.
