The archaeological findings are exhibited in the Museum in sections, which are intertwined in three axes - chronological-geographical and thematic. Adopting a modern approach to the cultural remains of the past, the visitor of the Museum is invited to follow, understand, but also to reflect on the evolution of the various aspects of the public and private life of the ancient inhabitants of Epirus. One room of the Museum is dedicated to the sanctuary of Dodona and a second to the king of Epirus Pyrrhus.

Over the last ten years, the Archaeological Museum of Ioannina, (NW Greece) has dealt with similar issues, either during the celebration of major cultural events, or by hosting "theme related" exhibitions. The paper focus on the presentation of an educational activity, designed during the celebration of the European Heritage Days 2011, under the title "Agonies of mortals/ Responses of immortals". The aim of the program was to examine how ancient societies respond to crisis situations, to impart new and complex meanings in students' learning process, and to find out what can we learn from the past.

This study consists of two parts: In part A the stelai under consideration are presented in detail. Part B consists of the catalogue, appendix and plates. The study of this sample of 169 pieces leads to interesting remarks on the dating, the local workshop and the geographical distribution of these stelai. Hence the cultural surroundings, along with the social background of the region are being illustrated, and the role of Ambrakia as a distinctive cultural center in the area of the Ambrakian Gulf becomes apparent.
