This presentation examines the dialectical relations among music, space, sociopolitical life, creativity, production, national formation and cultural identities in the neighborhoods of Piraeus where refugees and working class have settled, during interwar. Rebetiko is regarded as a mirror of the everyday. Our aim is to achieve a socio-spatial interpretation of rebetiko, exploring connections between the evolution of urban popular music and the places where it flourished. These places share important common like proximity to industrial zones, inhabitation by a large part of the working class, the settlement of refugees, proximity to port zones.

Μία από τις σημαντικότερες όψεις του αστικού πολιτισμού είναι η αστική λαϊκή μουσική παράδοση. Η εξέλιξη της αστικής λαϊκής μουσικής και η διαδικασία συγκρότησης της πόλης αποτελούν δύο παράλληλες, αμφίδρομες και διαλεκτικές διαδικασίες, που διαδραμάτισαν καθοριστικό ρόλο στη διαμόρφωση της λαϊκής πολιτισμικής ταυτότητας των διαφόρων αστικών κέντρων της Ελλάδας, κατά τα νεότερα χρόνια. Την περίοδο από τα τέλη του 19ου αιώνα μέχρι και το μεσοπόλεμο, που έχει χαρακτηριστεί ως μεταβατική, τα διάφορα αστικά κέντρα, όπως ο Πειραιάς, η Ερμούπολη, το Ηράκλειο, η Πάτρα, αναπτύσσονται με έντονους ρυθμούς. Σχηματίζονται οι πρώτες εργατικές συνοικίες μέσα από στις οποίες ανθίζει και διαδίδεται το αστικό λαϊκό τραγούδι, που μπορεί να περιγραφεί ως το τραγούδι των ανθρώπων που μετοίκισαν στις γειτονιές αυτές από διαφορετικές μεταξύ τους περιοχές και έψαχναν ένα κώδικα έκφρασης και επικοινωνίας. Παράλληλα, το νεοελληνικό κράτος βρίσκεται σε διαδικασία συνεχούς γεωγραφικής επέκτασης και συγκρότησης σε εθνικό κράτος, υπό ένα ομοιογενές πολιτισμικό πλαίσιο δυτικοευρωπαϊκού τύπου, που περιθωριοποιεί οτιδήποτε αποκλίνει. Σημείο καμπής της περιόδου που εξετάζουμε αποτέλεσε η βίαιη ανταλλαγή πληθυσμών στα Βαλκάνια, που ακολούθησε τους Βαλκανικούς Πολέμους (1912-1913), τον Α' Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο (1914-1919), τη Μικρασιατική Καταστροφή (1922) και τη Συνθήκη της Λωζάννης (1923), προκαλώντας τεράστιες πληθυσμιακές, κοινωνικές, πολεοδομικές, πολιτισμικές κι εθνοτικές ανακατατάξεις. Στις εργατικές γειτονιές των αστικών κέντρων όπου εγκαταστάθηκαν οι πρόσφυγες, άνθισε το ρεμπέτικο, μικτό μουσικό ιδίωμα μεταξύ Ανατολής και Δύσης, το οποίο διαδραμάτισε καθοριστικό ρόλο στη διαμόρφωση της λαϊκή πολιτισμικής ταυτότητας, παρά τις κατασταλτικές πρακτικές που το πλήττουν από τις απαρχές του. Η παρούσα ανακοίνωση επιχειρεί μία χωροκοινωνική προσέγγιση της λαϊκής αστικής μουσικής, δηλαδή τη σύνδεση ανάμεσα στην εξέλιξη της αστικής λαϊκής μουσικής παράδοσης και των χώρων στους οποίους ευδοκίμησε, βασικά χαρακτηριστικά των οποίων αποτελούν η εγγύτητα σε βιομηχανική ζώνη, η κατοίκησή τους από μέρος της εργατικής τάξης, ο εποικισμός τους από Μικρασιάτες πρόσφυγες και η γειτνίαση τους με λιμενική ζώνη. Εξετάζει τις διαλεκτικές σχέσεις ανάμεσα στην αστική ανάπτυξη, τη μουσική, το χώρο, την κοινωνική και πολιτική ζωή, τις σχέσεις παραγωγής, την εθνική συγκρότηση, τις πολιτισμικές ταυτότητες στις εργατικές και προσφυγικές γειτονιές των μεγάλων αστικών κέντρων της Ελλάδας από τα τέλη του 19ου αιώνα μέχρι και το μεσοπόλεμο. Στόχος είναι η ανάδειξη της αστικής λαϊκής μουσικής ως μία κυρίαρχη όψη του νεότερου αστικού πολιτισμού.

During the Ιnterwar period, the port of Piraeus was the main migration and refugee gathering point in Greece. In its refugee and working-class neighbourhoods, a genre of music blossomed, widely known as rebetiko. Attempting to achieve a socio-spatial interpretation of rebetiko, we shall explore connections between the evolution of urban popular music and the places where it flourished. We shall focus on two different examples, Drapetsona and Nea Kokkinia, in order to cast light on the way rebetiko – as a part of the popular culture – emerged from a nexus of social practices and experiences of the working-class refugee strata.

Η σχέση προσφυγικών περιοχών με την Αντίσταση είναι γνωστή, και γίνεται εμφανής μέσα από τις δράσεις, τις μάχες και όλες τις αντιστασιακές ενέργειες που εστιάζονται στους προσφυγικούς συνοικισμούς. Η σχέση της αστικής λαϊκής μουσικής και του ρεμπέτικου με τις προσφυγικές περιοχές, είναι επίσης πολυσυζητημένη, καθώς το μουσικό αυτό ιδίωμα άνθισε σε αυτές μέσα από ένα σύνολο πολλαπλών χωροκοινωνικών συνθηκών. Το άρθρο επιχειρεί να φωτίσει τις συνδέσεις ανάμεσα στο ρεμπέτικο και την Αντίσταση, μέσα από την εξερεύνηση των πολιτικών και ιδεολογικών υποβάθρων και γεγονότων της εποχής.
Επιχειρεί να αναδείξει τους τρόπους που διαρθρώθηκε ο Αντιστασιακός Αγώνας στις προσφυγικές γειτονιές και το πώς αποτυπώθηκε στην αστική λαϊκή μουσική κατά "μαύρα χρόνια" της δεκαετίας του '40, παρά την συστηματική αποσιώπηση ορισμένων πτυχών της μέχρι και μετά τη Μεταπολίτευση.

This research investigates the role of the Balkans in the emergence of urban popular music, developed mainly in the multi-ethnic port cities of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans from the late 19th century until the Interwar period, and in the blossoming of rebetiko in Piraeus during the Interwar period. Population mobility and cultural circulation were wide phenomena in the temporal and spatial context of the Ottoman Empire in collapse. In the Greek case, a vast number of people that lived in the Balkan cities during the late 19th century were encountered in Smyrna in the early 20th, and displaced in Piraeus and other Greek cities as a result of the population exchange between Greece and Turkey (1922-1923). Throughout these consecutive displacements, people transferred their cultures and practices, as well as their music, elaborating social, cultural and musical geographies in (constant) transition.

La thèse étudie l'essor de la musique populaire urbaine et du rébétiko à travers la formation des quartiers ouvriers et de réfugiés du Pirée pendant l'entre-deux-guerres. La relation dialectique entre l'évolution de la musique et les espaces urbains où elle s'est développée est mise en évidence afin de réaliser une interprétation socio-spatiale du rébétiko. Cette interconnexion est explorée, d'une part, dans les aspects invisibles de la vie quotidienne des acteurs des quartiers ouvriers et des réfugiés du Pirée, et, d'autre part, dans l'élaboration des pratiques et des cultures liées au développement de la musique populaire urbaine ainsi qu'à l'émergence du rébétiko, à plusieurs échelles : de l'échelle de la Méditerranée de l'Est à l'échelle locale des quartiers du Pirée. Une méthodologie hybride est mise en avant, en tirant des méthodes provenant du champ de la géographie critique, de l'urbanisme, de l'ethnomusicologie, et de l'histoire orale. Sur le plan théorique, l'espace, le lieu et la musique sont considérés à travers des débats et des relations socio-spatiaux développés dans le cadre temporel et spatial en étude. Notre recherche sur le plan empirique a révélé comment les conditions sociales et spatiales des quartiers sur lesquels nous avons focalisé (Néa Kokkinia et Drapetsona) ont relevé des aspects musicaux et culturels différents qui s'y sont émergés.

This research abstract examines the rise of a radical Anti-Abortion movement following the 1973 American Supreme Court decision legalizing Abortion. The study delves into the historical roots of this movement, tracing its development from earlier periods. Additionally, the paper analyzes the strategies, compromises, and ideological fervor of the Operation Rescue Group in comparison to modern militant anti-abortion movements in the United States. The author employs a range of sources including newspapers, biographies, court records, and journal articles to construct a comprehensive narrative.

This paper suggests some general approaches and raises some problems in studying the impact of Rome on the rural landscape in Lusitania. It concentrates on three crucial ways in which the landscape was transformed under Roman rule: (a) changes in the pattern of rural settlement; (b) changes in the nature of land use and agrarian exploitation; and (c) changes in the ways in which the inhabitants of Lusitania perceived and thought about their world. It argues that a synthesis is needed of archaeological evidence from across the province, so that the impact of Rome on rural settlemet patterns may be compared in differing environmental regions. Further intensive field survey should also help to resolve some current problems in reconstructing the pattern of Iron Age and Roman rural settlement. Increased collection and analysis of pollen samples, carbonised wood, seeds, agricultural implements and animal bones is needed to assess more precisely the extent to which the Romans caused major changes in the nature of land use and agrarian exploitation. When accounting for change, it is essential to consider a wide variety of factors and to remember that rural change continued to occur throughout the Roman period. Finally, it was in forcing the inhabitants of Lusitania to perceive their world in radically new ways that the Romans made a lasting impact on the provincial landscape. First, the Romans created broad ethnic identities for their opponents, ignoring the complex, highly fragmented ethnic and regional geography of the area. Then by dividing the region into clearly defined civitates, they forced the inhabitants of Lusitania to envisage the landscape in a very different manner than before. Finally, a series of rituals emphasising Roman power (the census, the holding of judicial assizes, and the activities of the provincial council) regularly reinforced these radically new mental maps of the new Roman provincial landscape.

The article publishes for the first time fragments of a monumental opisthographic inscription found in excavation in the NW corner of the forum of the municipium of Valeria (conventus Carthaginiensis, Hispania Citerior). Despite its fragmentary nature, the elegant streaked marble plaque attests on each side acts of euergetism by a husband and wife from among the local elite in the later Julio-Claudian period. It is the first marble inscription discovered at the municipium of Valeria and, as a result, must have made a striking impact in the epigraphic landscape in which it was displayed. In spite of its fragmentary condition, the fuller text (titulus 1) attests that the husband had returned to Valeria after a military career in the Legio III and possibly other units of the Roman army, to enter upon a local civic career, while it also mentions the formal reception of the wife in the local citizen body of Valeria (in numerum civium recepta), a privilege very rarely attested in the Roman west.  The article discusses in detail the function and display of the text, specifically whether the two sides of the plaque were visible at the same time or whether the plaque was taken down and reused for the second, shorter inscription. Some hypotheses are advanced about the physical context in which the plaque was once displayed.

This article uses the latest epigraphic techniques to read the full text of the epitaph inscribed on the granite cupa discovered in situ in 1972 in the calle Marquesa de Pinares, Mérida and now displayed in the Museo Nacional de Arte Romano (inv. 17240), which throws light on female sociability at the colony of Augusta Emerita in the early second century A.D.

this paper provides a critical re-examination of a funerary altar (CIL ii 497) from augusta emerita (Mérida, spain). it explores the strengths and weaknesses of all previous editions of the text from its first publication in 1633 to the present day, providing a critical review of the development of epigraphic scholarship on Mérida during this long period. Given the problems of all previous editions, including CIL ii 497, it then reexamines the altar using traditional epigraphic methods alongside the latest digital techniques (especially Morphological residual Modelling, M.r.M.) to provide a new edition of the text, while setting the presence of a female doctor at the provincial capital of lusitania into the broader social context of medical practitioners in rome's western provinces.
