Starting in early May, organisations that send text messages to customers and members need to authorise their phone numbers with authorities, according to Traficom, the Transport and Communications Agency.
The aim of the verification is to prevent fraud.
Traficom said the easiest way for organisations to confirm their numbers is to contact their SMS service provider.
"To ensure that messages sent using a Finnish telephone number or an alphanumeric sender ID can continue without disruption, organisations sending text messages to users must obtain authorisation for the numbers and sender IDs they use," a press release issued earlier this month explained.
Traficom initially rolled out the SMS identification system in late 2023.
The agency said that stricter enforcement of the so-called Regulation 28 will enter into force on 4 May.
"If sender IDs are not authorised, it may no longer be possible to send messages to Finnish numbers after 4 May 2026," Traficom's release said.
Traficom said that spoofing SMS sender IDs is a common tactic of fraudsters, with criminals posing as trusted organisations and sending misleading texts to unwitting victims.
