According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI), Finland will get increasingly cold over the course of the day on Monday and into the evening. Some areas of Lapland could see temperatures drop down to -25 degrees Celsius by early Monday evening.
In the southwest and along the western coast, temperatures will be around -10 degrees on Monday, with the rest of mainland Finland reaching that frigid level by the evening at the latest.
Southern and western areas of Finland could also see some light snow.
Further north and east, conditions will be drier, according to weather forecasts from Foreca. Fog is possible in Lapland, it said.
Warming up
On Wednesday, Christmas Eve, it will still be cold across most of the country, with temperatures hovering between five and 10 degrees below zero. Warmer temperatures at sea could make conditions milder in coastal areas, according to Tuukka Keränen, FMI's on-call meteorologist.
However, on Christmas Day, temperatures will start to rise, he said, noting that western coastal areas could be as warm as +8 degrees Celsius.
Snowfall that arrives on Monday and Tuesday is expected to stay put at least until Christmas Eve, according to Keränen.
"A few flakes of snow may even fall in Uusimaa. On Tuesday there will be a relatively light snow system along the eastern border too," Keränen said.
