Five people have died in an apartment fire in Vantaa.
The fire took hold in a flat on the bottom floor of a residential block during the early hours of Sunday morning, and five people died of their injuries. They were members of the same six-person family that lived in the flat.
Four of the dead were children aged under 10. The father of the family survived the fire and was being treated in hospital on Sunday. Police said the family were Finnish citizens from an immigrant background.
The fire was confined to one unit in the block on Heporinne in the Hakunila suburb some 17km north-east of Helsinki City centre.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control and evacuated six people from the apartment, according to Jussi Huhtala of East Uusimaa police.
Police suspect the fire broke out in the apartment's sauna, which could have been used as storage, with some of the items stored there catching light. The Safety Investigation Authority are investigating the tragedy.
