Still on track: Metro services likely to run in Espoo in September

Officials in charge of Helsinki’s metro extension have said that the project remains on track for a September launch as final tests continue. Local transport bigwigs met in Helsinki on Wednesday to discuss the much-delayed project.

Metro enthusiasts and Espoo commuters should be able to ride the rails on the western extension of the capital’s metro system in September.

Officials from the Länsimetro company and the regional transport authority met in Helsinki on Wednesday and agreed that the project is on track for a September opening. The last safety tests are currently underway, according to Länsimetro chair Olli Isotalo, and once they’re complete a more precise timetable will emerge.

“At present it looks as though it’s all going according to plan,” said Isotalo. “There haven’t been any changes.”

The extension, which runs from Ruoholahti in Helsinki to Matinkylä in Espoo, was originally planned to open in 2014.

It’s been repeatedly delayed, with the last deadline of August 2016 extended just weeks before the opening day.
