Finland's roads are getting safer, according to new figures from the Finnish Crash Data Institute. The Institute says that last year 259 people lost their lives on the road, down 22 on 2015.
The numbers show a marked decline in accidents caused by drivers under the age of 25, which the Institute attributed to a dip in applications for driving licenses last year. However the number of accidents caused by drivers between the ages of 25 and 44 increased.
North Savo was the region with the worst record, with 27 people dying in 23 crashes in 2016. That was an increase of 16 accidents on 2015.
Pirkanmaa saw the best improvement in figures, with 17 fatalities in 2016. That's a reduction of 17 on 2015's total of 33 deaths in traffic accidents.
