The Finnish postal service has begun employer-employee negotiations to shed staff in the northern city of Oulu. Nearly 50 people could lose their jobs due to a change in early-morning newspaper deliveries. As of early October, the largest national daily, Helsingin Sanomat, will be printed and distributed locally by the Oulu-based newspaper Kaleva.
This is triggering redundancy talks involving 47 people now responsible for early deliveries. The number of jobs to be eliminated will be clarified during the negotiation process, which begins on July 4.
The two newspapers, who are both battling a decline in advertising and subscriptions, have teamed up in an effort to lower costs.
Posti says the layoffs will not affect its normal mail deliveries or other services in the Oulu region.
Last week the postal company wrapped up redundancy talks in Kymenlaakso and South Karelia, which resulted in 86 workers losing their jobs.
