Authorities in the south-western city are probing two possible fake nurses who had been on the staff at Turku City Hospital, the tabloid Ilta-Sanomat reported on Friday morning. The city's Head of Health Services, Katariina Korkeila, confirmed the suspicions to Yle.

One of the unqualified individuals alleged to have posed as a nurse worked at the hospital's G1 geriatric psychiatry facility in the Kupittaa district, which has recently faced accusations of mistreating patients.

The other suspect works in regular wards of the City Hospital. They have both been fired.

Korkeila says that hospital officials are looking into whether there were threats to patient safety.

The National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health (Valvira) said in a statement on Wednesday that patient safety at the G1 department is sufficient.

The latest allegations come just days after Helsinki's Kätilöopisto Maternity Hospital dismissed four midwives for using nitrous oxide recreationally while on duty, and a staff member at Helsinki University Hospital's HUSLAB admitted to re-using needles last week. Last year a fake nurse was handed a life prison term for poisoning a patient.
