Driving on springtime ice no longer safe

The thickness and bearing capacity of natural ice has decreased dramatically across Finland. Driving vehicles over lake or sea ice is no longer safe, according to the Rescue Department.

Lake and sea ice can no longer carry the weight of a driven vehicle.

A case in point was reported on Saturday evening when the Central Finland Rescue Department dragged a car out of a lake after it had succumbed to the treacherous ice in Viitasaari. The driver was able to escape the sinking vehicle.

Also on Saturday, prior to the Viitasaari accident, a tractor fell through the ice in Hirvensalmi. The driver did not survive.

The Rescue Department urges people moving around on the ice to exercise extreme causion, as even ice that seems thick and solid can buckle under pressure and weight as the springtime sun's rays melt it away. No vehicles should be driven on ice at all this season.
