Staff of the Serena waterpark attraction in Espoo evacuated its premises on Monday afternoon due to intense smoke billowing into the complex. Some 1,500 customers were inside the park when the evacuation began.

Fire chief Karo Mäki said that Serena’s staff behaved exceptionally, and that all that remained for the fire department to do on site was to ensure that no one was left inside.

Mäki said that the customers of the resort were not in any danger and that no one was injured in the course of the evacuation.

The source of the sudden smoke blast is not yet known. The flurry of smoke has since subsided, and Mäki said that the source may never even be definitively established.
