Second fatal road accident strikes Toholampi

A 10-year-old boy was killed on Saturday evening when the motorcycle he was a passenger on ran off the road for unknown reasons in the western municipality of Toholampi. This is the second incident resulting in a loss of life in the municipality in one week, as four young people were killed in an auto accident in the same area the previous Saturday.

A motorcycle carrying two boys ran off the narrow Nisulantie gravel road near a sharp bend, killing the 10-year-old passenger and severely injuring the 16-year-old driver, who was admitted to hospital. The driver of the motorcycle was a Toholampi resident, but the deceased young passenger was not.

The accident was reported to the police at 11 pm. The Ostrobothnia police say relatives of the boys discovered them at the scene of the accident.

Anyone who may have information about the incident is asked to contact the Ostrobothnia Police Department via its hotline: 0295-440513.

This is the second fatal accident in Toholampi in the span of one week, as last week Saturday four young people were killed when their car ran off the road.

Police believe excess speed was to blame

The Ostrobothnia police estimate that the motorcycle was travelling at an undue speed before it ran off the road. They also describe the injuries sustained by the driver of the motorcycle as serious.

The police say the road was rarely travelled and no witnesses to the crash have been found, so their suspicion of speeding has not yet been confirmed.

The young driver of the motorcycle did not have a permit to drive the bike.

“It was a motorcycle designed for off-road enduro events, which was owned by the young man in question. Both of the boys were wearing a helmet. This has been a terrible shock to the youngsters’ next of kin,” says Chief Investigative Inspector Esa Uusi-Kakkuri of the Ostrobothnia Police Department.
