A work stoppage by nearly 300 domestic employees in the national mail carrier’s transport sector will last until Friday morning, according to domestic haulage director Timo Kinnunen.
The sweeping strike, which affects Itella's cargo services, began yesterday. Employees are refusing to show up to work in the wake of co-determination negotiations that resulted in the loss of 55 jobs.
“The strike will cripple cargo transport. The stoppage will have no effect on traditional postal transport,” says Kinnunen.
According to Kinnunen, the wildcat strikers are members of the Transport Workers’ Union AKT.
The only region where employee numbers grew was in Western Finland, increasing by 0.5 percent.
The effort has received funding from the EU.
"I reaffirmed Finland's support for regional stability and securing a path towards the two-state solution," Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen (NCP) said.
