Giant investment in south-western electrical grid

Power distribution company Caruna has invested 60 million euros in improving the south-western Finnish electricity grid. The network upgrades will employ 230 people over the next three years.

Caruna plans to improve the reliability of the medium and low voltage network and weatherproofing in sparsely populated areas such as Satakunta.

The work will see the direct creation of some 230 new jobs, on top of indirectly generating around double that number of positions, says Caruna’s Executive Director, Ari Koponen.

"With the investments we want to guarantee our customers reliable and weatherproof supply,” Koponen says.

In addition, Caruna will build a new distribution network and renew the above ground cable network in metropolitan and conurban areas. The overhead cabling will be replaced by more than 2,000 km of underground cable.

Caruna is Finland’s largest electrical distribution company. Fortum  completed the divestment of its Finnish electricity distribution business to Suomi Power Networks Oy, which formed Caruna in December 2013.
