At least nine hurt in two-van collision in Kolari

Two minibuses collided around 9am Sunday in western Lapland, leaving nine people injured.

Altogether there were 15 Lithuanians and Finns in the two vans, which crashed in the municipality of Kolari. Two people have serious but not life-threatening injuries. All those hurt have been sent to the Lapland Central Hospital in Rovaniemi. Two of them are Lithuanian.

Altogether 10 rescue units took part in the operation, including two from over the nearby Swedish border.

Aggravated endangerment and bodily harm

Police say that according to preliminary information, the driver of one of the vans, a middle-aged man from Eastern Finland, was speeding while pulling a trailer, when his vehicle struck the Lithuanian minibus at an intersection on the E8 motorway. The driver is suspected of aggravated endangerment of traffic safety and causing bodily harm. One lane of the highway remained closed on Sunday afternoon.
