Thousands without morning power, some rail disruptions continue

Around 10,000 households were still without power on Monday morning in the wake of a storm that swept across the country overnight.

Gusts of wind measuring up to 26 metres per second were recorded at Helsinki-Vantaa airport, and the Finnish Meteorological Institute reports that winds hits 24 metres a second In Porvoo and at Jokioinen.

At midnight, close to 50,000 households were without electricity, as trees felled by the high winds downed power lines in some areas.

By 7:30 AM, around 10,000 households, mainly in central and eastern regions were still in the dark.

The storm also disrupted rail traffic during the night. As of Monday morning, most lines had been cleared and repaired, but on the line between Riihimäki and Lahti trains were being replaced with bus transport due to a continuing malfunction.
