Retail milk prices up

A 30 percent increase in the wholesale price of milk implemented by Finnish dairy cooperative Valio is being passed on to consumers by most retail outlets. An Yle phone survey found that whole milk prices are up by an average 20 cents per litre.

Valio announced its 30 percent wholesale price rise after Finland’s Competition and Consumer Authority in December found that Valio had been selling its wholesale milk at loss-making prices to force the competition out of the market.

An Yle phone survey on Friday showed that whole milk prices in shops are up by about one-fifth. Skimmed milk now costs consumers a few cents over one euro per litre. Price rises do not affect special milk products.

The immediate price rise range was found to be from one-tenth up to one-quarter of Thursday's price.

Prices for Arla Ingman and Satamaito whole milk have also gone up in step with the Valio price rise.

Not all retailers, however, had put up prices by mid-day Friday.
