Reluctance to take flu jab causes concern

The National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) is concerned over the reluctance of many to take precautionary flu jabs this winter. Worries amongst the public stem from the few cases of narcolepsy contracted from the swine flu jab.

“Unfortunately the furor has increased reluctance to take inoculations during the current influenza season,” commented Research Professor Terhi Kilpi to Yle on Wednesday.

According to Kilpi, the current seasonal vaccination is unrelated to Pandemrix which was linked to outbreaks of narcolepsy.

“Influenza jabs are always tailored to the epidemic at hand. The current jab should give protection against three virus strains,” Kilpi explained.

Some three quarters of all military conscripts have been vaccinated against the latest strains of influenza in a bid to stem the progress of infection.

Kilpi notes there are no current signs of a pandemic. At the moment swine flu is just one of several viruses in circulation.
