Centre Party to Pay Back Most of Nova Funds

The Centre Party has agreed to repay two-thirds of the money it received from the now-bankrupt Nova Group. The main debtors of the bankruptcy estate of Nova also agreed to a settlement reached Tuesday morning. The Centre is to repay about 115,000 euros it received from Nova in election campaign contributions.

Nova Property Developers had originally originally demanded that the Centre Party return some 100,800 euros, while its parent company Nova Group hopes to claw back 74,000 euros.

The settlement was reached after three hours of talks involving representatives of the Nova estate, Centre Party Secretary Jarmo Korhonen and a party lawyer.

Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen's Centre Party is said to have made two separate offers to Nova Property Developers. The party initially offered to pay back 40,000 euros, but later slashed the figure to 20,000 without explanation.

The Nova estate had threatened legal action if the Centre Party did not bow to the administrators' demands.
