The library is arranging for convicts to be able to read bedtime stories, which are then delivered on CD to their kids at home.
The project, aimed at strengthening bonds between children and incarcerated parents, is the first of its kind in Finland. Similar ventures are underway in Sweden, Denmark and Britain, where it is known as Storybook Dads.
In Vaasa, the project will be carried out through a study group where fathers will get help in choosing and recording stories.
The book will be sent with the CD to his child, thus allowing the convict to play a role in the youngster's everyday life and help his or her own development.
The venture is part of the 'Getting Netted' project funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) and administered by the Culture Department at the Seinäjoki School of Applied Sciences.
