Conscripts Head Home

Around 9,000 military conscripts head home on Friday after completing their national service. About half of them have served a basic six months in a branch of the defence forces, and half have served a full year. On Monday a new batch of 14,000 conscripts will be reporting for service.

Both Friday and Monday will be busy days for quartermasters and base armouries as outgoing servicemen turn in equipment and new conscripts are issued their gear.

Base health services are also expected to see a spike in visits. However, the Defence Forces reports that the swine flu epidemic that hit several garrisons during the early part of the winter has fallen off sharply since Christmas.
