Police in Turku have ruled out the powerful opioid fentanyl as being a factor in the deaths of six young men in the city in April.

The men, all aged in their 20s, died in separate incidents which police believed at the time may have been caused by an exceptionally dangerous drug, such as fentanyl.

However, forensic tests showed no traces of the opioid in any of the men's systems.

"A forensic investigation into the causes of death of the six men, all aged about 20 years old, has been completed. Fentanyl has not been found in any of the deceased during the forensic tests," Detective Inspected Jari Riiali said in a police press release.

However, the investigation revealed that the causes of death may have been poisoning related to drug, alcohol and prescription drug overdoses, or their combined effect.

The deaths have been classified as accidental, but police noted that the investigation is still ongoing.
