The boost to lawmakers' salaries will be implemented in two phases. The first phase of the hikes, amounting to a 1.6 percent increase, goes in to effect on 1 May.

The second pay bump - an additional 1.6 percent - will be implemented at the beginning of next year, on 1 January, 2019.

In a release issued Thursday, the remuneration committee said that the decision factored in the general policy on salary increases agreed to in labour market negotiations this spring.

The committee said that it aspired to ensure that MPs' salaries and pay growth would remain in balance with nationwide salary increases.

The topic of MP reimbursement attracted wide debate recently, particularly in relation to the question of so-called adjustment pensions for ex-MPs.

Parliamentary groups are expected to decide on lawmakers' pension policy later this spring.
