The Administrative Council of Yle has decided on Yle's new strategy in its meeting on May 13, 2025. The strategy update allows Yle to respond to changes in Finnish society, the ever-faster development of media consumption, and Finns' expectations regarding Yle's content and services. The update also takes into account the report of the parliamentary Yle working group.
"The strategy is ambitious and forward-looking. Its successful implementation will strengthen the population's trust in society and increase the nation's mental resilience to crises.Yle operates transparently according to its strategy and communicates openly and understandably about its activities and funding. Cooperation with commercial media will be further deepened. A responsible and diverse media structure that serves the entire nation and withstands crises is part of national security of supply and a democratic society," says Sinuhe Wallinheimo, Chairperson of the Administrative Council.
Yle's updated strategy emphasises the areas in which the company must succeed in the near future in order to fulfill its mission responsibly.
Yle's updated strategy highlights the need for the company to remain Finland's most trusted news media, a home for shared cultural experiences, and an inspiring motivator for children and youth. The strategy emphasises the visibility of all of Finland to all of Finland - Yle will increasingly showcase different people, ideas, and lives from across the country. The strategy also guides Yle to continue investing in digital content and services. Yle's future relies heavily on digital development, as Finns' media consumption changes and evolves increasingly fast. The constantly renewing Yle will operate according to the new strategy more effectively and transparently.
"Yle will turn one hundred years old next year, and we will certainly continue to be the public broadcasting company for all people. We want to reach diverse individuals across Finland, regardless of how they live or think. We want to provide an up-to-date and diverse image of Finland in our content. This is also a matter of security of supply," says Merja Ylä-Anttila, CEO of Yle.
"The strategy is the company's best vision of the world in the 2030s. The new capabilities of artificial intelligence have astonished everyone. Yle must respond to this with new services and new content to stay competitive in technology. At the same time, we must develop future skills in people and ensure that we remain an attractive employer. These issues are common to all media, and Yle still wants to offer a hand for collaboration in finding solutions," says Matti Apunen, Chairman of the Board.
The new strategy is valid indefinitely. According to the Yle Act, the Administrative Council decides on the company's strategy. The draft strategy was under review with various stakeholders. Based on the strategy, Yle's board sets the company's goals for the coming years and monitors the implementation of the strategy.
