Although the foreign-born master's towering presence tends to obscure all others, we should remember that Thomas Augustine Arne (1710-78) is considered the greatest native-born English opera composer of his day as well as the most popular composer of songs for the London theater and pleasure gardens. Arne composed a myriad of songs, cantatas, and instrumental compositions in addition to music for over one hundred stage works, and his influence long outlived him. In the late eighteenth century Dr. Charles Burney, the great historian of music, stated that English vocal music, which "seems to have remained stationary for near half a century," was greatly improved "by the compositions and instructions of Dr. Arne, who endeavoured to refine our melody and singing, more from Italian than English models." 1 In 1825 another prolific music historian, Dr. Thomas Busby-also a successful theatrical composer, organist, and talented translator and poet 2 -stated that Arne "begat a partiality for that flowing, sweet, and lucid style of melody, which captivates the ear by the simplicity of its motivo, and satisfies the understanding by the truth and emphasis of its expression.
