"Well good morning, beautiful."
Sonny turned over and gave me a sleepy grin, eyes still half closed. He pulled his hands out of the covers long enought to make fists and rub his eyes, then put them back in the warmth and security of the blanket. It was currently close to 20 degrees farenheit outside, -7 celcius as I see it, and there was a light coating of snow outside. Sonny and I were warm though, as we had the heater on and it worked amazing during the winter.
We had flown home from Los Angeles the night before. Once we had the news we had been waiting for, we were ready to get back to our own home and continue our lives as normal.
"Morning, babe." Sonny said, looking at me with adorable little squinty eyes. I grabbed his glasses off the nightstand and placed them on his face so he could see me better. Meowingtons jumped onto the end of the bed and crawled up, settling himself between Sonny and I. I leaned over him to give my husband a kiss.
"Happy birthday, gorgeous." I said to him, smiling so hard my face hurt. I had been watching him sleep most of the morning, wanting to wake him up and tell him happy birthday so bad but he was too adorable, laying there, curled up beside me, lightly breathing, so I let him sleep until I couldn't stand it any longer.
"Thank you, love. What time is it?" he yawned and reached for his phone. "Aww baby, it's only 9, you couldn't have let me sleep a little bit longer?"
"Hey, I wanted to wake you up like 3 hours ago but you looked way too cute sleeping." I said, smiling innocently.
"You're adorable so I'll let you fly by with that one." he laughed. "So, it's my birthday, are we doing anything special today?"
“No shit, Sherlock. Naw, we're just gonna sit here and stare at each other.”
Sonny laughed and flicked at my ear. “You know what I mean, sillyface. Are we just gonna have a nice day at home or go out and do something? I can still leave the house, I'm not gonna start showing for another month or so.”
I hugged him tight and looked at him adoringly. “Baby, we're gonna celebrate this day as much as we can. A few days ago, I thought I was going to lose you. It's like life has been restarted, and I plan on living it that way. Especially for a day as special as today.”
“Well, I can't go too awful crazy, seeming as I should probably be on bedrest, but I'm up for a little fun. What's there to do in Toronto really?”
“Enough to have an amazing birthday, hopefully.” I replied, getting up. “First off, what do you want to eat?”
We ate a homecooked meal of eggs, pancakes, and hashbrowns, at Sonny's request. I wasn't much of a cook, but I took extra care making breakfast this morning. I wanted the day to be perfect for my special husband.
It's funny how you have to nearly lose something to really know what you have. Sure, I loved Sonny with my everything already, but I realized during the past few weeks how bad off I'd truely be without him. I had taken him for granted before because the thought of not having him once I'd married him already never crossed my mind. When I said “til death do us part” I never expected to have to deal with the posibility of that very thing happening so soon. Now, I didn't take a single moment with Sonny for granted. Every breath and movement made by him was precious to me.
Sonny took a shower while I cleaned up the kitchen and got on the computer to figure out what we were doing today. After a little searching around online, I found the perfect thing.
“Hey, baby?” I asked as he joined me in the living room. “How does ice-skating and seafood sound?”
“Ice-skating? I'll fall on my ass. Can't be good for the baby.”
“I'm pretty good at it, I'll make sure you don't fall. I mean, it's the perfect thing to do right now since it's the middle of winter and there's snow outside. Come on, it'll be great.”
“It's gonna be really cold.” Sonny said, plopping himself next to me.
“I'll bundle you up. I've got plenty of jackets and scarves and gloves, we'll be nice and warm.”
“What about the skates?”
“We can rent them there.” I set my laptop on the coffee table in front of me and pulled Sonny into my lap. “And I found a cute little sushi place we can go to afterwards.”
Sonny's eyes lit up when I said sushi and I knew I had won him over.
“Okay, I guess. I need to go blow dry my hair and you need to find all the scarves and stuff.” I let him up so he could go get ready and I headed up the stairs to my bedroom to find all the stuff I needed to keep us warm.
I dug around my closet and managed to find a jacket that was a little small on me so it should fit Sonny perfectly. I found myself a jacket and a couple pairs of gloves and scarves for the two of us. I dug through my clothes and found a pair of sweatpants I could fit under a loose pair of jeans. Sonny joined me from the bathroom soon and I helped him find something warm to wear as well.
“Do we need to pack up any drinks or anything while we're there?” Sonny asked me as I had him try on the jacket I found. It fit him just right and he looked pretty sexy in it, if I do say so myself.
“Nah, there's a refreshments stand there with coffee and hot chocolate. No coffee for you though, young man.”
Sonny smiled and then sighed slightly. “I don't mind too much, I'll give up anything to have a healthy baby.”
I hugged him and kissed the top of his head. “Same, babe. Now let's get going before it gets too late. Most people get there later in the day, so I figured we'd go early and have less of a chance of people stopping us and asking for pictures or whatever.”
I handed Sonny a pair of gloves and a scarf and stuffed my own into a jacket pocket. I'd wait to put them on until we got to the rink.
I called us a cab and we headed downstairs to wait for it. Sonny went ahead and bundled himself up the rest of the way – gloves, scarf, and jacket fully zipped up. I giggled at how adorable he looked bundled up in my stuff. Oh how I adored that boy.
We got in the cab when it pulled out front and I directed him to the Natrel rink. It was a pretty popular rink in Toronto, so I knew the cabbie would have no problem finding it. Sonny gazed out the window like an excited little kid seeing snow for the first time. It was a normal site for me, but I knew Sonny didn't really have much experience with snow in Los Angeles.
“I can't wait to play with our kid in snow like this.” Sonny whispered to me.
“Me too. We'll make their first snowman with them and go sledding and ice skating and everything.”
“Something I never really did as a kid. I'm glad our kids get to enjoy it.”
“Me too, hon, me too.”
We arrived at the rink and Sonny got out as I paid the cab driver. I quickly reached into my pockets afterwards and pulled out my gloves and scarf. It was definitely chilly outside. I think 'chilly' was an understatement, actually.
I grabbed Sonny's gloved hand with mine and we walked to the little rental shop. I paid for our skates and carried both pairs so Sonny didn't have to. There were little lockers to put our shoes and stuff in so we sat down on a bench nearby and put our skates on. I made sure Sonny laced his up tight enough for extra ankle support, and I helped him stand up once he had them on.
“This is gonna take some getting used to.”
“Well, it's been a bit since I've been on skates myself, but once you get the hang of it, I guess you never forget, like riding a bike. You skateboard, so it shouldn't be too hard for you to find your center of balance, right?”
“Yeah, I guess so.” Sonny walked around a little while I finished getting my own skates on. I placed our shoes in the locker, then led Sonny out on the ice.
He took slow careful steps onto the ice with a firm grip on my hands. After a minute of walking around, he attempted to actually skate with them and nearly fell. I grabbed him up quickly and he laughed nervously.
“Not as easy as I expected,” he said shakily.
“Yeah, it takes a little practice. Hold my hand and I'll try to guide you, okay? Watch my feet.”
I skated out slowly, holding his hand so he wouldn't fall. He followed my lead and glided with ease, only teetering a little once he came to a halt. I continue and soon we had made our way out nearly half way across the rink. Sonny got a little worried once he realized how far out we were, but I diverted his attention back to me by giving him a warm kiss on the lips. I knew we were both getting pretty chilly but we were having fun so the weather didn't matter too much.
“Are you ready for some hot chocolate?”
“Yes!” Sonny said excitedly.
“Wanna race back to the side?”
“Oh no. No way! I'd fall so fast you wouldn't see it coming. You have to hold on to me.”
“Fine, wimp,” I teased. Sonny fake pouted and then stuck his tongue out at me. I held his hand and headed towards to side, pulling him along with me. He tripped over his feet a few times but managed to make it back without falling, luckily. We got our hot cocoa and sat on a bench to drink it.
“As cold as it is out here, I'm having a lot of fun. Thanks, baby. You're always good at coming up with awesome things to do.”
“So I guess that means you're having a nice birthday?”
“I'm having an amazing birthday.”
I smiled and leaned over to press my hot chocolate heated lips against his. I heard a giggle from a few people around us who I guess recognized us, but I couldn't be bothered. I was having a perfect day with my husband, the birthday boy.
