Let’s talk about “poodling” at cons and meets and why I think that anti-poodling rules are harmful to the long term development of our community. I’m not the first to write about this and certainly not the last. But it takes reiterating. 🧵1/15

For the uninitiated: poodling is a term referring to the act of fursuiters showing any amount of skin as part of their costume. anti-poodling rules are when you restrict fursuiting in public spaces to only wearing costumes where no to little skin is allowed to be seen. 🧵2/15

My argument is broken up into three segments on what grounds the practice of leveraging anti-poodling rules as a measure of control of furry events’ public spaces are harmful to the community at large. 1. Accessibility 2. Gender discrimination 3. Artistic gatekeeping 🧵3/15

If the norm of participation in fursuiting is “no skin allowed”, you create disability for participants who get hindered by the rule. It may be anything from difficulties regulating body heat, a difficult skin condition or something as simple as discomfort. 🧵5/15

In conclusion: Anti-poodling rules is a method of control by few, limiting our spaces for often marginalised groups and hinders the development of the furry community’s ability to survive long term. Be with the times. Free the skin. 🧵15/15

Anti-poodling is often used discriminately against femme-presenting furs and perpetuates misogynistic prejudice. The effect of letting misogyny fester in our community is that our spaces do not feel safe for women and femme-presenting non-binary participants. 🧵9/15

Regarding accessibility. Disability can be defined as any condition of the body or mind that hinders participation in an activity according to an expected norm. Accessibility can be considered the process of broadening the norm in which participation is possible. 🧵4/15

Let’s talk about gender discrimination in the furry community. While being wonderfully queer, the furry community and its gatherings at large are incredibly male-dominated spaces. 🧵8/15

Engaging in the process of accessibility is always an intersection between cost-benefit analysis and what conditions are considered reasonably acceptable hindrances. I think we should err on the side of inclusion by making sure our rules are not needlessly hindering. 🧵6/15

By having relaxed policies, where you also don’t have to ask for permission to show skin, we also don’t risk stigmatising people with certain conditions and create more inclusive and inviting spaces. Which brings me to the next point. 🧵7/15

And that leads me to my last point of artistic gatekeeping. What is even a valid anthropomorphic character and who’s the judge of that? 🧵11/15
