There was a time when you can call a local franchised store. UPS, FedEx, Micro Center, BestBuy, etc. all used to have a local number to call the exact branch. Good luck calling Chipotle if you left your wallet. Calling a Marriott hotel goes to a central call center ffs.

I recall having a ThinkPad that had a physical on/off switch for wi-fi.

I still can't get over riding in a CAR that is (mechanically) dead quiet. the machine must groan, heave, sweat, curse through its exertions as it conveys me over road and span. it MUST.

This was an indicator, a signifier of activity, that was quietly replaced by silence. We yearn for it, our curious idling mind.

What the heck is it doing? Is it thinking or is it stuck? Exposing the state of the computer (CPU, SSD, RAM, etc) using indicators should be built into the design of the computer. It's interesting that Apple spent millions in the touchbar boondoggle only to roll it back instead

Midjourney scanner video was filmed and edited by the founder @DavidSHolz. I can see why it had to be this way. Incredible. Certain things are indelegable.

The old MIT website was amazing. I remember visiting once a week to see what the new page looks like. They'd customize the logo & CSS to match the cover story. The new website still has cover stories but it's not the same.

They say each scan is 806TB and they hope people are imaging daily. One scan/day × 806 TB × 365 days = 294,190 TB, or 294.19 PB. Using AWS S3 Glacier Deep Archive, which AWS lists at $0.00099 per GB-month / about $1 per TB-month, the storage-only cost is: 294,190 TB ×
