    1/5 This is a post about failure, triggered by recent discussions in the lab about how we talk about success but are not as transparent about failure. This week I learned that my HHMI application would not be considered further. Rejected. It was my last chance. I was devastated.

    4/5 The point is to be transparent talking about failure, and how I feel after failing, to the colleagues in the lab, and to the more talented and deserving colleagues that may have had similar news.

    Racism and bias are so embedded in the structures of academia that this fight is a forever fight. Like fighting mud. Some days I feel hope. Others I just feel ashamed of who we became and what we permit. Us. Me. Crying of sadness, shame and rage at the same time.

    One year ago my friend, my mentor, Maria de Sousa, passed away with Covid-19. She was an amazing immunologist that changed science policy, started a graduate program, and a foundation to help young scientists. She wrote this poem days before knowing she had Covid-19. To friends.

    3/5 The point of this tweet is not for people to feel sorry for me, or encourage me, or for me to overemphasize what is clearly a first-world problem even in science. I have had a very lucky and privileged path in science. I am ok and confident about the future.
