Writing this piece has been very hard. Yet, despite feeling shock, grief, and anger, I wanted to pay tribute to my friend Hisham al-Hashimi, who was assassinated last week outside his home in Baghdad. chathamhouse.org/publications/t…

I don't know where to begin, Hisham. It's been a complete shock. How can we write? But I know you'd want us to tell your story, and even more to continue your dream of trying to bring a positive future for Iraq and its people. Thank you for all that you've taught me, my friend.

"He was an Iraqi nationalist that wanted the best for his country. I asked him if he was scared and he said 'there is fear, but the duty is bigger.'" @renadmansour reflects on the life and work of Hisham al-Hashemi and the impact of his assassination on Iraq's politics.

This has been years in the making. My new paper looks at the PMF & the state in Iraq. Puzzling many, the PMF is not a coherent org but a series of fluid and adaptive networks that have developed into security, political & economic forces that compete for power in the Iraqi state

Iraqi democracy never stood a chance: I argue that the corrupt order that replaced Saddam is not just a flaw stemming from poor planning, but a design to empower Iraq's new leaders. The political system won't bring democracy - it was never meant to do so.

#IraqiProtests are powered by a younger generation with a stronger desire for radical change. Unwilling to reform, Iraq’s leaders have come together to defend the system, reviving the tools of repression to maintain power. My latest for @ForeignAffairs.

Down but not out, #ISIS is transforming from a pseudo-state into an insurgency, fueled by its financial capabilities and the neighbourhood's informal economies. Our thoughts for @ForeignPolicy. @hushamalhashimi

Hisham’s last words to me were: “the situation here isn’t good…We need to write about this. You, me – we need to write.” We will write your story and continue your legacy, Hisham al-Hashimi.

Upcoming elections in Iraq won’t deepen democracy. They reenforce the political system, marked by antidemocratic practices and corrupt and unaccountable governance. The result: a majority of Iraqis no longer voting. My latest:

My latest: I consider the challenges facing new MPs linked to the protest movements. They are facing a divided elite who know how to coalesce to defend a system protesters have long said is broken - one that elites continue to benefit from.

65 percent of Iraqis are under 30 and youth unemployment is estimated at around 17 percent. An important read by @vandentoorn on the need to revamp Iraq's education system. niqash.org/en/articles/so…
