If you are new in algo business, it may take very long time before you find > 3 sharpe strat (not talking about arb with small capacities). But you can succeed to build a pf of strategies (medium alphas) with combined sharpe > 1.3⇿1.8. GL.

Remember, you can run a small algo trading company and have no idea what linear algebra is and still make money. But you will see a lot of linear algebra in paid substack, have you make any money with that IRL 😅?

Give me "quant" stuff that don't work/overfit/have survivorship bias : ⇾ Modern portfolio theory (past returns not reproducible ⇾ survivorship bias). ⇾ test ADF for pair trading (what rolling period, p hacking, range not autoregressive ?). Many TKS.

Questions for the quants : Sharpe ratio + R2 + max drawdown (or mc max drawdown compute) on equity curve are complementary metrics, and these three are enough to capture the overall value of a strategy ? Would you exclude or add a new one ? Are you ok with that ? Many Tks !

If you wannabe full-time algo trader, I think the main blocking point is multi-skills (trading, dev, business orientation). And a difficult part is feedback loop ⇾ you are alone and can dig a long time in the wrong direction.

Little thread on my last 4 years as algo trader tips/errors I have done : ⇾ Create your business alone if you have 0 XP in algo trading is hard. Try to find persons at the same level or little better than you to collaborate at least on shared infra/tools.

Summary of 5 years algo crypto trading business. As @pedma7 asks me about performance. 🟢 Phase 1 (2020): Mean reversion algos, long only. Good performance but mostly long bias - was lucky. No Sharpe tracking, just starting out. 🔴 Phase 2 (Bear 60k→17k): Market making
