there exists a welfare program where you can't buy unhealthy/"expensive" food, it's called WIC, and it's awful. I have a friend who worked at a grocery store and regularly watched people break down crying because they picked a kind of chickpeas WIC doesn't cover

did you know infants only get meat on WIC if their mothers are breastfeeding? if your baby drinks formula (perhaps because your shitty minimum-wage job doesn't give you time to pump) then WIC doesn't cover baby food with protein. because fuck you.

in California WIC covers one jar of peanut butter per month for pregnant or breastfeeding women. what if you're allergic to peanuts? can you swap? no. because fuck you

Nani is coerced into giving up guardianship of Lilo because she failed to sign up for Medicaid and thus Medicaid wouldn't pay Lilo's hospital bills, but if Nani gave up guardianship then the government would pay for Lilo's bills

The moviemakers weren't blindsided by a policy change-- they inaccurately represented retroactive coverage, which has *always* been Medicaid policy. Frankly, I think misinformation about what Medicaid covers is dangerous. For better or for worse, people do learn from fiction.

the pros 100% outweigh the cons, but we also have the option to give people money without the BS! + it's not that the system is impossible in a vacuum, it's that people are stressed and overwhelmed and unsure how to feed their kids already and it's just One More Fucking Thing
