For 15 years, I’ve been studying 1960s civil rights protests with particular attention to how nonviolent and violent actions by activists & police influence media, elites, public opinion & voters. I'm thrilled some of that work was published last week. 1/ cambridge.org/core/journals/…

Remember folks, the Electoral College: — Designed to increase power of slaveholding states via 3/5ths clause — Winner take all rules created, in part, to deny equal voice to Black voters — In 1970, popular reform blocked by filibuster led by segregationist Senators

New study finds ”places with Black Lives Matter protests experience a 15% to 20% decrease in police homicides over the ensuing five years.” Further, the effect ”is most prominent when protests are large or frequent.” papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…

Gloria Gaynor was dropped from her label, had an accident at a concert & became partially paralyzed. She endured spinal surgery, a three-month hospital stay & needed to wear a back brace for many months. And, out of that journey was born “I Will Survive.”

'I Will Survive' Saves Marginalized People A Spot On The Dance Floor
Recorded after a traumatic period in the singer's life, Gloria Gaynor's disco hit quickly found its true audience: LGBT communities, survivors of domestic violence and others pushed aside by society.

To make sense of the pro-Trump attack on the Capitol, many folks have analogized to military conflicts like the War of 1812. A better analogy is rooted in our long history of racial authoritarianism. This wasn’t war, this was a lynch mob. 1/ 👇🏽

“It seemed absolutely crazy. The idea that an Iowa housewife, equipped with the cutting-edge medical tool known as Google Images, would make a medical discovery about a pro athlete who sees doctors and athletic trainers as part of her job?” propublica.org/article/muscul…

If folks want to drive in same direction as other traffic on public roads, they are free to do so. Those who don’t want to drive in the same direction as traffic on the right side of the road shouldn’t be shamed into it, and govt should not mandate it.

Sci-fi taught me that when the whole earth is attacked by space invaders, all of humanity will unite to fight back. Covid taught me that when the whole earth is attacked, half of humanity is going to side with the aliens.

The way to understand the panic over critical race theory is as a reactionary counter-mobilization. After George Floyd’s murder & ensuing wave of protests, a focus on racism in America took on new urgency. Fearmongering over CRT is largely a project to delegitimize that movement.

When Jen and I got married, the officiant said a single twig can be snapped but sticks in a bundle are unbreakable. I’m reminded of that today where each retweet was only a tiny act but the collective action produced something magical: in less than 24 hours we found @jenbrea.

I’d like to see a film about how leading environmental scientists recommend nuclear power to solve climate change but they’re thwarted by green activists in Germany, California & New York who fight to close nuclear and increase carbon emissions. Call it Don’t Look in the Mirror.
