Right. Smallholder peasants have a bad harvest so have to borrow grain from a larger neighbor to eat through the winter and plant in the spring, with their land as collateral. The next season’s harvest is mediocre and now they’re tenants on land they used to own.

not to detract from the point at hand, but I worry that a major theme of the 21st century is that sooner or later “white-collar first-worlders,” i.e. almost everyone responsible for the world not being 95% subsistence farmers, will get categorized as an Overperforming Minority

History has consistently shown that the most extreme bigotry is usually directed against high-performing minorities, e.g. Croats in Yugoslavia, Tutsis in Rwanda In the West, the Jews are the most obvious example, but this also applies to South Asians, East Asians, even queer ppl
