My gfs family does this thing where they just sign their name at the bottom of a sappy birthday card and expect the receiver to get emotional over what the hallmark people wrote

When I first got into philosophy I thought you could just pick up some seminal text by Kant or whoever and read it. I didn’t know you already had to be well versed in the entire history of western thinking first.

The funny thing is that within the family, this actually works. My gf bought her dad a Father’s Day card back in June and signed her name. Her dad opened it, read it, and teared up. And my gf felt responsible for his response to it because “she picked the card”. Wild.

I went to buy a card for someone’s birthday a couple weeks ago and spent 20 minutes looking through a wall of options trying to find a blank one. They don’t exist. There’s a whole untapped market out there waiting to be exploited.
