Our Office is investigating the tree trimming that occurred outside Universal Studios where workers, writers, and actors are exercising their right to picket. The trimmed trees are LA City managed street trees. (Before and after photos below)

UPDATE: With cooperation from the Bureau of Street Services, we have found that no tree trimming permits have been issued over the last three years for this location outside Universal Studios. Also, the City did not issue any tree trimming permits for the latest tree trimmings.

Trees are essential to providing Angelenos with significant environmental and public health benefits, especially during a heatwave. Public Works’ Bureau of Street Services (StreetsLA) is responsible for maintaining the City's 700,000+ trees in the public right-of-way.

Trees can be trimmed by a StreetsLA Urban Forestry Division (UFD) crew as part of its trim cycle, or as part of a Council District’s trimming allotment. A business can also obtain a permit to trim a tree. StreetsLA issues permits to businesses & conducts follow-up inspections.

Code enforcement for street trees (including the pruning or removal of trees without a permit) is the responsibility of the StreetsLA Investigation and Enforcement Division. Violations can result in code enforcement citations.

Seeing City officials in the press ignore the severe impacts of these budget cuts, especially the ones covering for their poor budget decisions to cut a majority of departments' budgets & even AFTER Chief Crowley told them about the impacts these cuts have had, is DISGRACEFUL.

Trees should be trimmed every 5 years. 🌳 Our 2019 StreetsLA audit uncovered resource constraints & lack of modern data mgmt tools that led to troubling delays in the City’s trim cycle. Trees were trimmed every 18 yrs & has since worsened to every 21 yrs.

INVESTIGATION 🌳 UPDATE: StreetsLA has informed us that they are issuing a citation in the amount of $250 (first-time offense) to Universal Studios. The citation alleges a violation of trimming trees without a city permit. Outdated laws limit penalties the City can issue.

Re: Today's ICE Raids in the City of LA As City Controller, we will be formally requesting information from the LAPD to determine the financial impact these ICE raids have had in using City resources, such as the LAPD’s involvement and response to the resulting demonstrations.
We are horrified by the federal government laying siege to our beloved City and terrorizing members of our community in coordinated and widespread ICE raids today. These raids are cruel, tear families apart, and are an affront to who we are as a city. Attacking and corralling community members from local hardware stores and warehouses is just another instance of dehumanizing immigrant workers. The City of Los Angeles is built by immigrants. LA is stronger, better, and a true testament of our principles when we welcome and care for our immigrant neighbors.

The City of LA’s Sanctuary City Ordinance prohibits City resources from being used to aid federal immigration enforcement. However, today, the City witnessed through videos and media coverage Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers within the vicinity of ICE raids. LAPD’s presence raises serious questions about whether we are abiding by our City’s mandate as a Sanctuary City and is a cause for concern and confusion regarding L

The City of LA's Urban Forestry Division (UFD) will coordinate w/ StreetsLA’s Investigation & Enforcement Division (IED) to confirm if this case warrants the issuance of an administrative citation or hearing. If issued, the administrative citation fee starts at $250. (From BSS)
The City of Los Angeles Urban Forestry Division (UFD), which is part of the Bureau of Street Services (StreetsLA) and oversees permits for tree trimming in the City, did not issue any tree trimming permits for 3801 Barham Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90068.

StreetsLA will issue a Notice to Comply to the property owner at 3801 Barham Blvd. This is standard practice for when work occurs in the public right-of-way without permission. UFD will also coordinate with StreetsLA’s Investigation and Enforcement Division (IED) to confirm if this case warrants the issuance of an administrative citation or an administrative hearing. If issued, the administrative citation fee starts at $250.

We are at UCLA. There is a large police presence from multiple law enforcement agencies after outside mobs attacked peaceful student protestors last night with no one protecting them. Students now face police. We urge UCLA & City leaders to protect students, not do more harm.
