Absolutely brilliant day on the hills for the @Dunc10in10@mssocietyuk
Morning fog on the first half, clearing to cool, bright conditions - and thanks to marshals for excellent cake!
Thrilled to complete in under 10 hours!
Today I cried in court. I was watching 3 lovely, articulate, passionate young women (the older 2 just out of their teens) come to terms with the fact that their Dad was going to die. Doctors believed that continuing life-sustaining treatment was not in his best interests.
By the end of the hearing I'm emotionally exhausted -and all I did was watch.
For the family, the judge, the doctors, the lawyers involved it must have felt gruelling.
I witnessed such care, compassion + courage today.
The court at its best.

Shocked our young waiter who asked "is it a special occasion?"
"Our wedding anniversary!"
"How long have you been married?"
I said 19 years, adding we'd got married in Canada as same-sex marriage wasn't lawful in England in 2003.
He hadn't known marriage equality was so recent.
A GP has just told me that someone's advance decision to refuse a feeding tube if, as her dementia progresses, she becomes unable to eat and drink, is "euthanasia", unethical + unlawful. I can't believe we're STILL having these kinds of discussions.
Horrendous that "being outed" is even still a thing today. As someone who came out as lesbian in 1973, I really thought the world had moved on! So sorry that someone maliciously forced you into this position. But welcome and congratulations!
Distressing convo today. Her 98yo mother was fitted w PEG after stroke (+ died 9 months later). "When I told Consultant she'd not want the feeding tube, he said 'so you want to starve yr Mum to death?' After that I didn't feel I could say more." She's "haunted by the cruelty".
Along with many other women championing @FernRiddell I've changed my Twitter name to show I have a PhD by adding the prefix "Dr". I'm honestly also rather proud of "Mrs" too - having campaigned long + hard for same-sex marriage. Would "Dr Mrs Kitzinger" be over-doing it?

My mother, Sheila Kitzinger, would have been 92 today.
I SO wish I could tell her about @OpenJusticeCoP (with a court-ordered caesarean the other day) + @CDOC
I learnt so much about campaigning + social justice from her. She'd love what we're doing.
My mother, childbirth researcher and activist Sheila Kitzinger, would have been 89 today

So pleased to see many others building on her work, improving childbirth for mothers and babies. @Humanisingbirth @HackneyDoula @WeMidwives@MaryNewburn1@RCObsGyn
This is a really powerful letter from ICU doctors to a C-19 patient who refused a ventilator believing it would only prolong her suffering and not increase the length or quality of her life. Doctors agreed with her.

Patient tips to help doctors to talk about death and dying. Try asking, "Can we talk about palliative care please - in case the treatment doesn't work" - and don't be fobbed off by attempts at reassurance or "we'll cross that bridge when we come to it". Start the conversation!
Our new report reveals that people are only too ready to talk about death and dying – but often, their doctors are not.
We want to help change this reality – for patients and GPs alike.
