I will be on vacation for the next three weeks. I will be using my time off to drive around and sleep in a hammock in the desert. I'm also going to try and stay off socials a bit. I rarely get to do that because of how my job works so it should be nice to re-center a bit.

My dad built supercomputers and works on the hardest problems on the planet. He had offers from Nvidia and Google in the 2000s because he was very early to both massive distributed systems and GPUs. Now? Won't touch him with a ten foot pole.

A few friends of mine are holding the "socratic suffering club", where we present frivolous papers to each other. I am presenting Paul Krugman's 1978 paper "The Theory of Interstellar Trade", where he derives conditions for interstellar interest rates under special relativity.

He builds ultra high performance boxes for broadcasting companies to send high quality video/audio at exactly 24 frames a second. It's a hard problem but I think it's been difficult to find other work.

Man when I started my PhD I just went up to whoever the fuck and started chatting. It works, and it makes you more recognizable than like 98% of the other PhDs. Very good for the job market -- do it early and often

My brother who is not an economist but a private equity partner, attended my NBER SI presentation on Thursday and chatted with more journal editors in one afternoon than I have in my entire career. Economists have no idea about "real networking."

A simple, fun example to refute the common story that ML can interpolate but not extrapolate: Black dots are training points. Green curve is true data generating function. Blue curve is best fit. Notice how it correctly predicts far outside the training distribution! 1/3
