I had a PM at Facebook in 2022 who was reported to HR by a new grad and reprimanded. His offense? He said "my WIFE" instead of "my partner." This is when I realized wokeness was out of control.

Prediction: Wokeness will recede significantly in 2024. There were always more people against it than there seemed, but many were afraid to say so. Now that it's safer to criticize it, more will.

A Stanford Sophomore floored me with this comment today: It's easier as a Stanford student to get into YC than get an internship at a reputable company. Everyone knows this and every batch there're Stanford founders who did it because they had no other options.

Peter Thiel told me over breakfast in 2012 "Growth solves all problems." 10+ years of telephone later, founders report ARR by taking the last days revenue and multiplying it by 365

To be clear, FB was pretty amazing and not particularly political on either side of the line internally. But this was just weird why hr was dealing with

Contrarian move that's working out really well for one of my friends: Shack up in a tier 2 city with a great university (Seattle, Austin, Atlanta). Hire the best from that university. Easier to hire and close, better coders than Stanford, less of a retention problem

A documentary about how T-Rexes and Deinochyus escaped and ate all the tourists in jurassic park would easily rake in $$

When folks dig into quantum tech in SV, very few things look like there's a clean, believable hypothesis into why this will actually work. DC sees the risk if it does work, but doesn't know how to judge the probability / investability by looking at the technical thesis

Not much to elaborate. Highly uncharacteristic one off and HR had to react since it was reported and it was their job. But odd it even happened

A now controversial take: Invest in grinders with a history of excellence. Someone with high SATs, attended MIT/Berkeley/CMU/TsingHua/IIT/etc, is a Putnam fellow, and worked at a frontier lab or hot startup. High beta and if this is you, I'd love to talk and invest

No it's not. And no one is saying it's bad to do yc either. Plenty of comments here on why they're the right ones to bet on and I'm 100% certain the yc classes will still be great returns for LPs. But it's a signal about the state of starting companies in general and the asset

@tszzl you're young. When your joints start to hurt, you won't care about what this roon person on Twitter thinks and you'll just be glad you have a comfy chair for the joints

Why? Why does anyone owe the world anything? Why is there a moral obligation? Not saying I disagree, but the statement feels like you're trying to impose a philosophical belief system more than anything else.

I don't care if you're a VP at a hot startup or a place like Google. If you can't describe how a mission statement recursively breaks down into an org design, you're a junior manager at best and overleveled by like 8 layers. Period.
