WTF is Filecoin? When folks think about web3 protocols - storage is usually on the list, but its not obvious how approaches differ. Sia is private! Arweave is permanent! ..but then wtf is Filecoin? I'll take a stab at explaining how FIL works & why its designed the way it is. 1/

Until Filecoin had the fvm, you really couldn't "use" Filecoin in a tangible way unless you were doing some hard core stuff + running your own infra (literally running dedicated nodes to batch / store / renew things ). You were most likely to use Filecoin indirectly through NFT

i genuinely hope when people build staking products for FIL they don't use standard names like - sFIL - stFIL - lFIL and instead go for fun names - joyFIL - powerFIL - wonderFIL

a few other things that are pretty exciting to keep an eye out for 2024: 1) the capabilities of @Filecoin's storage / retrieval offerings continue to expand -> teams like @BanyanComputer and @FilecoinSaturn are layering on top to bring UX and performance on top of the base

Filecoin is still my core position. Though it has nearly doubled - I continue to be excited about not only its possibilities with data sovereignty but also AI use cases (check out Bacalhau). Wealth effects from the Solana ecosystem likely also supportive of rerating
