I'm grateful to @DouthatNYT for inviting me on his podcast to discuss the fate of the liberal arts and humanities in the age of AI. I hope that all those who follow higher ed and care about the liberal arts will listen. nytimes.com/video/opinion/…

I think his super Catholic posts are so fascinating. Why? He's Presbyterian and his base isn't Catholic. Does anyone have a theory?

Assisted suicide bills are always sold to the public as increasing autonomy and preserving dignity when we all know they do the opposite: they prey on the weakest and most vulnerable among us, precisely by denying their inviolable dignity and seeing them as better off dead.

Can someone explain to me why curriculum transparency is wrong? It just seems very basic to me that schools should be transparent about what they teach. I put all of my syllabi online. It's fine.

Aristotle argued that women were defective humans and some folks were natural slaves. Yet, I teach Aristotle and label my own views broadly Aristotelian. It is possible to appreciate what is true and good while discarding what is false, people.

I am informed by my university DEI office today that every student has a fundamental right to "feel safe." The way I would describe doing philosophy is feeling like the ground is moving out from under you. Nobody "feels safe" doing philosophy if they are doing it correctly.

University presidents get fired when their research looks suspicious or they plagiarize, regardless of race. Happened at Stanford (white guy) and it happened at South Carolina (white guy). Sorry, but not everything is about race and gender, and sometimes you have to take the L.

I buried a human fetus that I named Felix in March. Felix had a human face, perfectly formed limbs, an umbilical cord growing out of its belly button, and ten fingers and ten toes. I know this bc I held Felix in my hands and stared for hours at what my body had expelled.

Remember when everyone lost their minds when Tom Cotton suggested sending in the guard over riots? I do.

Dear Professors: When a student writes an op-ed you disagree with, you can respectfully disagree and engage with her ideas. You don't need to resort to the worst forms of uncharity, incivility, and overreaction.

Felix's due date is coming up so I don't have the energy to say much more than this: no matter what your politics is, I don't think you can or should deny the humanity of the unborn. When we talk about abortion we are talking about two human beings. Proceed from that reality.

Sitting next to an undergrad couple in the Starbucks on campus and one is reading Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian and the other is reading Plato's Apology. I hope they get married, y'all.

One reason Gay is being forced to resign is on full display in her resignation letter: an unwillingness to acknowledge any failures on her part. She is simply distressed that people have criticized her.
