$50k in debt. $200 in my bank account. A failing startup. Then: @ycombinator , raised $16.5M series A, and I walked away from it all. Here are the 11 raw startup lessons from my 8-year founder journey that every founder needs to hear🧵:

Today is DEMO DAY!!! When you find the CEO of @ycombinator personally making sure everything is perfect, you know you are in a very special place. Garry Tan gave a rousing speech to the batch and we are SO pumped. Already heard from so many investors that this batch is breaking

. @ycombinator gives founders many things – awesome partners, funding, demo day, etc. One of the most underrated things YC gives us is BELIEF. @avinashjoshi and I launched @oncactusai on Bookface late last night, and our hearts are overwhelmed with the responses. It’s not just

"What is your moat" - No customer ever asked. Just find an intense pain point and go solve it with your product. Stop thinking "strategy" at pre-seed and seed!

    1. Startups need builders, not titles Early-stage startups need people obsessed with building, not those chasing grand designations. I once interviewed someone who just wanted to be "VP of Data Science". If you're great at what you do, there's no need to hide behind fancy

    5. You should draw enough salary to survive as a startup founder. You need enough salary to focus on building without stressing about living expenses. Taking zero salary for 4 years was my most stressful experience.

Cactus (@oncactusai) is building an AI copilot for solopreneurs. Cactus automates admin tasks for private chefs, caterers, and personal trainers, so they can focus on what they love— think Jarvis for Iron Man. ycombinator.com/launches/NSp-c… Congrats on the launch, @avinashjoshi +

    11. Put yourself where luck can find you You have to create opportunities for serendipity. Network, work hard, strive to be the best. The real startup education isn't in books or universities - it's in the daily grind of building something useful.

    4. Your spouse needs to be your biggest supporter I got married at 24 and started my first company right after. My wife supported our household for 4 years while I took zero salary (worst decision ever). Even now with @getCravd , her support keeps me going.

    10. It takes 5-6 years to truly understand entrepreneurship Year 1: you're excited but clueless. Year 5: You truly get the hang of it It's only after multiple failures, pivots, and challenges that you start understanding what building a company truly means.
